The funky forties revisited

This is my chosen dress for the fundraiser evening (I'm DJ'ing a "Gangster" night). The thing is, do you think I can kill two birds with one stone and wear it to a wedding at the Law Society in London? I'm thinking of keeping that golden beige colour, but any suggestions are always good!

I think it looks smashing. I can see in a sort of brass/gold colored satiny fabric-heavy enough to have some body but fluid enough to pull off the look of the dress. Good luck!

Perfect for both occasions, I'd have thought.

BTW, if you don't have it already, pop out and buy the latest Vogue pattern magazine: with all the 40's stuff you want, you can get a good deal on their patterns using the Buy One, Get One Free coupon in the back. You do have to POST the coupon as this offer is not available on line or by phone.

Oooh I bought this pattern on a whim because it looked so nice - I have no occasion to make it for but I do love looking at it! I'd love to see pics when you finish it!

Hehe, good point, but I think red might upstage the bride at the wedding (oh, how I do flatter myself) as she's got a dress with a scarlet fishtail (because she bought red Jimmy Choo shoes and had to have the dress match them...). I was thinking peach, but I think I might look washed out. I've just got to decide how to do my hair now!

The dress is gorgeous and in the color on the pattern cover, will be perfect. One of my DGD's wore this dress to a formal party recently and she had her hair done in the same style as one of the picture on the cover. Emily

Hi Charlie,

Looks OK for a wedding to me. I wonder if you could make so that the over shoulder throw was detachable? This might give you more options with the dress.

I sometimes find with dresses with short sleeves or no sleeves, that I get cold arms, and like to put a jacket on top. I think the over shoulder throw might look a bit weird or be awkward with a jacket on top.

However, I think with the right accessories for each event, the dress should cover both.

That's a very good point. I can also imagine (all too easily) hopping into the car, or in and out of my seat at some sort of event, sitting on the throw and momentarily strangling myself. I guess you'd have to be careful of convertibles, too, lest ye succumb to Isadora Duncan's doom.

The dress as it's shown is a "standing up" garment. If I were going to make it up for an event that involved a lot of sitting, or sitting down and jumping up repeatedly, I'd probably make the right side of the garment symetrical to the left and make the wrap detachable, wrapping across the chest and hooking it to the side seam under the right arm. That way if it wound up driving me nuts I could just detach it rather than having to contemplate rash acts in the restroom with a pocketknife.

Ooh... I wonder if there's a way to make it so the detached wrap could serve as a stole...

Now that sounds like a plan. A plan so cunning, it's a fox. =D
