Thought on Stores

I went to the new Hobby Lobby we now have. I was looking for inexpensive fabric to make bags to wrap odd shape gifts. I didn't take a lot of time checking out the store. I had a lot to do and was in a hurry. Having said that, the people in the the fabric department were very pleasant and helpful. The woman who runs the fabric department is probably the nicest person who ever worked in Joann's. I was wondering about what others think of Hobby Lobby. I don't expect to find *great* fabric, but do hope to find things that suit a particular need when I'm out there looking for fabric for small projects. Any thoughts on the company would be appreciated. If there isn't much difference in the 2 stores I think I would probably got to Hobby Lobby rather than Joann's. They have coupons on the net . It's about the same distance for driving and the people who work there are very nice. Juno

Juno, Personally, I would go to Hobby-Lobby any day rather than Jo-Ann's. I can find almost any fabric I want there or online. I also find cute iron-on appliques, dried flowers, cute knick-knacks, plus model airplanes, cars, etc for the DGSs. DS uses their framing dept often. They opened a new store last year near our home, too.

I have been a faithful customer since the early-90s when the first store opened in El Paso. But they are not open on Sundays, they quit years ago.

About a month ago, I went to Jo-Ann's for the first time in almost a year, only to be laughed at by a clerk and a customer/possibly friend, when I asked for some applques and cloth books that are printed on one piece of fabric to cut & sew. I bought them in Jo-Ann's often in the past. They had a poor selection of bias tape and zippers; pver one-half of the store was posterboard, scrapbooking, and other crafts. I even found lip-gloss.

Thanks for your input Emily. I'll have to go when I can spend more time. The saleslady who worked in Joann's previously said she was very happy to be working there. She said it was a very pleasnat atmosphere to be in. Juno

Juno,

We had a Hobby Lobby open in our area about a year ago and while I've been there and made a few purchases, the employees in our particular store are less than friendly. I usually only shop at Joann's with a coupon and the coupons at Hobby Lobby are rarely for fabric department purchases. Being closed on Sunday is a drawback for me since I usually am able to shop on the weekends rather than weekdays. Hobby Lobby does have some nice fabric but ours is fairly limited.

Juno,

Oddly enough I just received an email from Hobby Lobby telling me they will be selling online as of Jan 1.

Judie, I'm inclined to think that all stores have "good stores," "OK stores," and "bad stores." This is brand new place in a mall that has been recently redone. Lots of space and what looked like a good selection. As I said I didn't have a lot of time to wander but I thought the fabric selection looked pretty good. I could find my way around with out tripping over merchandise and the assistance i received was excellent. I just picked up some fabric to makae gift bags for difficult to wrap toys. When I told the woman helping me what I wanted it for she steered me to the sale fabric instead of the more expensive bolts. She also went serching for the ribbon I wanted to use as a draw string for the bag. I've never had that kind of service in Joann's. rhis coupon on the internet doesn't exclude fabric. Have a look.>

Juno,

You're right about the coupon and I just happened to have one of those sitting in my inbox. I haven't been reading much of my email lately just not enough time and I don't like it to pile up so I've been hitting that delete all button a lot. I bought some lovely fabric for a nursing cover up when they first opened and they also had the boning I needed for said cover up. Joann's does carry boning but my local store didn't have any in stock. Most of the fabric I've seen at Hobby Lobby seems fairly uniform as far as quality unlike Joann's, in fact some is comparable to my local independent fabric store and the local quilt stores. IMO at least.

And it's great to have a choice!
