thread- sewing machine agravation

using an older singer with thread post where i put the spool

every once in a while the thread gets under the spool and the tread breaks before i realize what is happening

any tricks to stop this?

Do you have the felt in place at the base of the spool?

Peter, If the felt doesnt help try taping a large eyed needle after the thread post, like the ones used for sewing up knitted garments this keeps the thread up and away from the bottom of the spool HTH Ann

If you are using cops rather than 'proper' reels, try netting the thread, like this:

Even new machines have posts to put the spools on you know ;-)

Is your thread catching on the little cut slot they put on the edge of a reel to hold the end of the thread when it's off the machine? I've had that happen - and boy it's annoying! The answer to this one is to invert your spool. Mind you the new style reels with double tops and bottoms where you can wind the thread and it grips it negates this particular problem.
