Touch & Sew 758 question

Touch & Sew 758: I got it an (apparently) perfect condition in a carry case, and went to a bit of trouble to find the 'summit' cabinet with drawers for it and install it. It looks great, but- The stitch length was 12 when I sat down to it for the first time, but after I tried some different settings and went to 6 (longest) it won't go back to

12 or anything shorter than 6. Tried flipping into reverse, scrolling through stitch settings, nothing. So I set it on 'fine' stitch and put it away hoping the cam will relax back down to that setting, hoping that the default is short stitch, not the other way. The dial setting moves fine, but the stitch stays long. I know this is a lubrication issue inside the housing, but I wanted to know from someone if it's in the basic undercarriage or if I have to get into the upright part of the machine behind the dial. Any suggestions either way? Thanks,
