trims

the Young Pirate Brennan is so far very pleased with his red velveteen pirate coat. we are now seeking trim of a proper Piratey nature. the pattern calls for (rounding up): 4 yards of 1 1/4" wide flexable trim & 3 yards of 3/8" flexable trim, plus 28 3/4" buttons. it appears to be more important to have the narrower trim flexable. the wider trim can be mitered. he doesn't necessarily want metallic trim, but would be happy with a black or silver lace for the wide trim & black or silver narrow braid for the narrow. he'd be ecstatic if i could find 'jeweled' trim... but this is a costume for a 5 year old, so i'm not going nuts over it (unless the trim can be salvaged & transferred neatly to something else later). i didn't see anything at Cheeptrims. are there any other good sites for trims? i need to finish this by the first weekend in July, or i'd consider making my own jeweled trim for it (well, i might anyway if i can't find/order some before Monday). lee

This is for a FIVE YEAR OLD. Go find some tacky braid in the sale bin at your local fabric or hobby store, then glue on some fake "jewels". If necessary, you can always spray on a coat of acrylic fabric paint to make it black or silver. Likewise with the buttons. Whatever is in the sale bin can also be spray-painted to suit. Let go, let your creativity roam, have FUN.

I agree make it easy on yourself - I cheated and got a pair of pirate Pj's and said it was a pirate costume - it came complete with an eye patch, headscarf and a dagger and he feels like a real pirate in it ;-) and it only cost me 7 euros too!

Michael's doesn't carry trim. both local Joanne's have been a total bust for braid type stuff, and have nothing in the

1.25" width (of course they'll have buckets of it for Halloween). tomorrow i'll go to Manchester & see what Martin's has... i am having fun, but i'm not finding trim that's remotely interesting or useful, just not very attractive lace & even that is too narrow :p the buttons are easy, since they're non-functioning.

yeah, i know he's 5, but i'm a costumer & this needs to be better than stage work or i'll hate it.

no, never heard of them... don't suppose they sell online? oh, they do! or at least offer a catalog. and the Acton store is only 2.5 hours away... if my friend in NYC wasn't in the process of moving apartment from one he's lived in for 30 years (SO much Stuff!), i'd give him the sizes of what i want & send him off to the Fabric district. he's done off-Broadway costumes & has a good eye... lee

i'm one of those anti-WalMart people. can't say i'm desperate enough for trims to compromise my principles LOL i'm thinking the 1.5" trim is going to be made of 1/4" braid in a Celtic knotwork pattern with sew-on plastic jewels in the spaces between the knots. lee

Good for you. I also choose not to trade with that particular company

I was wondering if you might be able to zigzag some of the narrow trims together. (On a grownp, of coure, I'd do fagoting, but for a kid I figure zigzag will do.)

Don't forget thrift stores. It seems that every community has one that gets a lot of sewing stuff - estates? cleanouts? Who knows. But I have picked up some great stuff, sometimes still on the card, bolt, in the package - at pennies on the dollar they originally cost. Not to mention being special.
