trouser waist-button vice catch

My trousers, which were tailored in Singapore, have both button and catch-hook in the waistband at the top of the fly.

do they have different functions? Why did the tailor put in both, not just one or the other?

I have bought pants in regular stores here in Saskatoon........far far far from Singapore........and they have had the same thing. Only dress pants of course, and not all of them........some of the more recent ones are the self belt style, and those have it too, only the catch hook is usually closer to the side seam.

Otherwise I don't know if there is a specific purpose for why the tailor in Singapore did it. I didn't help much.
