Ugly "fashion"

I have a strong distaste for some current "fashions" that are just plain ugly on everybody. Hoodies - really, what is the point of putting a useless and ugly hood on every sweater and top unless your camping. Shrugs - may keep your shoulders covered but look out of proportion and out of place. Those long sleeve sweaters that have long ties and end just under the bust. They only look presentable on 14 year old size 2's.

Let's hear what everybody else thinks are just plain Ugly Fashions. Maybe it will help us not to waste time sewing something that could not look good on anybody and save us from blaming ourselves for disappointing results.

Clothes that billow out at the stomach. On some people they look good, like if that person weighs 90lbs. On me I look pregnant, and I am working hard after having three kids to NOT look pregnant.

I hear leggings are coming back. They weren't pretty on a lot of us in the

80's, and since a lot of us have aged since then, I hope we won't be wearing them this time around! Again - best on skinny women.

I've been waiting along time for a fashion that really lots "the best" on women with 10-20 extra pounds!

I'm not saying I like my jeans up to my armpits, but I've had it with jeans that are so lowrise you need a bikini wax to wear them!

The only people who can wear those super lowrise jeans are young skinny girls who shouldn't be exposing anything those jeans seem to leave exposed.

As for shrugs, I agree. Why not wear the whole sweater??

Basic classics generally work -- think of a Chanel suit or the like. You might also check out the book, "Flatter your Figure" by Jan Larkey, that will show you how to pick styles that don't emphasize what you don't want emphasized. I found it extremely helpful.

Tapered or fitted dress shirts untucked.....make everyone look like an unmade bed, AND like they were purchased 2 sizes too small.

And my all time less favorites, Horizontal stripes, no matter the size and pedal pushers, Clam diggers and Caapri pants. Juno

Around here there are a lot of capri pants in toiles. To me it just says "my butt is so big I can wear farm animals on it." lol That was my first thought when I saw a woman wearing a pair that, no kidding, had cows, sheep, etc. in the print. Not flattering.

I'm also tired of the jeans that are so low, the fly requires a doll sized zipper. It makes it really hard to buy jeans. I'm short enough through the rise that the moderately low ones fit pretty well...the waistband hits just below my navel, very comfortable. But any lower than that and the leftover belly (you know the part that won't go away with crunches after babies) hangs out. Makes me feel like a middle aged, out of shape guy with a beer belly!! UGH!!

Oh, and for those of you, like myself, dreading the come back of leggings it gets worse! The girls around here are wearing the micro mini denim skirts with leggings under them. Can we say 1985???? *sigh* It wasn't a good look the first time, it's still not. :(

As for the sweaters that tie, I kind of like those. Course you have to remember that, again with my short torso, the ties fall just above my waist. ;) So it's a different look on me, but not too bad. lol

----you think you got it bad??? DD just turned 14. So I'm looking at these trends and trying to keep a teenager clothed. Yeah, big fun. LOL

"Belly" shirts - those shirts that are so short your stomach shows. Why on earth would a person *assume* I'd want to see their stomach?? And, most of the girls/women where them do not have too much belly to show int he first place....

Personally, I think the lingerie-as-outwear look is rather tacky. But then, when I grew up it was a dreadful faux pas to let your underwear show--slip peeking out from under your skirt, bra strap visible when you wore a sleeveless blouse, that sort of thing. Now people don't even wear slips, and bra straps show all the time. Gad, I'm so out of date.

Fashion? I quit paying attention some time ago. I wear what is comfortable and feels good and what I feel good wearing. If it is in fashion or not, I don't care. Seems like it's just a way to get people to throw out their clothes and buy more, and I don't care to play that game.

It is no accident that "vintage patterns" are so popular. If you can't find what you want in the current pattern books, you can go looking in the vintage sites. You could even get one of the pattern drafting programs and free yourself completely.

Have you all seen the Muffin top pants. That the style where the hip huggers push the fat up over the top of the waistband. Blech!!!!! Normally worn with Belly shirts so you see the whole roll.

Had to reply at this point because.....I wore clam diggers/pedal pushers with an untucked, fitted dress shirt to church today with some mules....actually got compliments on it. But then, it's one of the few looks that works for me....short skirts don't cut it in church, and the weather is too nice for the ankle-length ones

Exactly. I think everyone should decide for themselves what they like or dislike and dress accordingly without "fashion police" deciding what is "ugly" and try to round-up votes on this NG to support their point of view. Unless they're trolling, of course...

It seems to me that's what we do. We sew and wear what we like. Larisa is comfortable in clam diggers and fitted shirts, she wears them. That does not make what's right for her bad. All my daughters wear clam diggers and most of my friends. I don't like them, I don't wear them and I look terrible in them. I also look terrible in skirts, dresses, and short shorts. I also don't really care what other people like or wear. It's their business. If I think something is ugly that's my opinion. I will voice my opinion, Larisa voiced hers and you will voice yours. Does that make any of us fashion police, I don't think so. We also don't need NG police. Juno

Well said, Juno. NOw, my other fashion "favorite" are the longer suit jackets (I think they were once referred to as "lab-coats"). They work for me as I am 5'8" and do well with leaner looking lines. Some people can't stand them, which is perfectly all right with me.

I have one of the blouses that has the ribbon under the breasts and floats free around the middle....needless to say, it doesn't float so freely with me, and the only reason I have it is because my mother gave it to me. Have I worn it to somewhere nice..nope, but running errands on a hot day with my jean shorts, yes. DO I really like it, nope, but it's lightweight and on the HOT days, feels lighter than a t-shirt when working in the yard.

Anyway, the point is that I agree that we wear and sew what we like. I won't wear short shorts either, but I can and do wear dresses at times. DO I look askance at women who don't?? Nope, not at all, in fact, most times, I am jealous that they have the freedom to move more in slacks than I do in dresses, but...I'm rambling again...a 24hr roadtrip and whirlwind visit to D.C. with a 2yo takes a lot out of a person

Thank you Larisa. I think it's the only way to dress. Wear what you like, what your comfortable in and what looks the way you want it look. Juno

You are welcome. Wear what you are comfortable with, but please, if you are visiting me, let what God gave you be covered, remember, I have young and curious children around :-)

There are so many, where do I start? Those rediculous "blouses" that resemble camisoles, look as though the wearer forgot to don her outer garments. Long dresses...they look plain 'dowdy' on anyone. The goucho pants unless they are worn with the proper type boots. Fat ladies in to tight any thing....desses, pants and espcially knits...(cover up those bulges, don't advertise them). I could go on forever but I won't because I'm not perfect either. Dot in Tennessee
