Velvet Highalnd jacket toile

I'm making DGD her first velvet competition jacket like:

am going over tomorrow for a final fitting. I finally figured out a method (I hope) for giving the extra ease in the sleeves to allow raising both arms above the head, and yet still providing for a smooth fit when the arms are down, and without the bulk of a gusset. I have both sleeves machine basted into the toile jacket, with one shifted slightly around to the back and the other shifted slightly forward. I'll see which gives the best fit and appearance and I'll re-set both sleeves after the fitting. This jacket is going to be finished so DGD has a back-up jacket. I'll start on the real deal next week.

JFYI, I re-shaped the sleeve head to flare it slightly, cut the *under-sleeve* with an arch UP, which fits the armscye which is also raised a bit. The result is almost like an added gusset, but without the extra seam. If this works, I'm going to apply for a patent...

You should get a patent before someone else has the same idea. Good luck on the fitting. Emily
