Web site down!

Sorry folks - the web site is gone! In the move to broadband, we failed to notice that the broadband deal gave us only 100 meg of web space, and with the old deal we had 250. As we'd already reached 247, they shut it down at midnight Friday GMT. Oops! Our error... :(

It will be back soon, in a new revamped state. Some things will have to go to make room for newer stuff, so if you are particularly fond of something or feel it was particularly useful, let me know. Damn - I now have a bigger revamp job than I thought...

However, all this is as nothing compared with the hours of fun and amusement we had with our local friendly computer wizards getting the thing up and running so that we actually have a live connection and can use the phones again tonight! There was a considerable amount of head scratching, carpet removal, and telephone archeology as DH and chum traced the lines we have put in over the years... Because of the way we have used the house and the phones, there is a glorious hodge-podge of wires threading hither and yon, to phone points in every room - and two in some! It's all working now, and we can relax while we consider what can go off the site, and just how we are going to rewire the phones so we can have all the points working as they should... I really think that not only do we need to rationalise and prune the web site, but we also need to rationalise and prune the phone wires! There is no need, with yer actual modern wireless phones to have a phone point in every room except the bathroom - and that was a close call!

But the phone always rings when you're in the bathroom. Some days, that's the only time it rings.

Good luck! Look forward to seeing the site up and running again - it's a source of so much info for novices like me.

Kate, a wireless router is your friend! (Also, cordless phones, but only if people can be trusted not to leave them in bl00dy stupid places).

The wireless router is the only reason we are up and running now! The trouble was finding a socket that worked to plug it in to that was close to a power outlet... Could not be done! So the router is plugged into the master, the rest of the sockets are bodged to that for now, and we do have cordless phones (two of them at present: we've been cordless for about 15 years on the phone side). These multifarious sockets are from pre-cordless days, when we also wanted to plug the Atari's into the phone so DH could plug into his work network and mainframe servers via a dialback system, and the sockets and wires are A: 20+ years old! and B: largely redundant! Trouble is that they are threaded through the house like grass roots of veins!

Mine's from NT-hell, so is separate bit of kit (just requires router to be reasonably near modem, which is nowhere near master phone socket). I am, however, glad that we have a cellar here, although we still had to post thin son into floor void in one place. Still beats the rigmarole with

300 miles of ethernet at the old place though.

I need to pray more. I would love to have one of those buttons on my base unit.

I turned off the answering machine (those silly people expect you to call back!) and just look at the Caller ID. Sometimes I'll call back....sometimes I won't.....

Solar power makes such good sense out here. I have a 20+-year-old solar water heater, and my back yard and front walk have solar lighting. With sun, wind, water and geothermal sources plus vegetable oils, we could cut loose from fossil fuels. Sooner.....or later.....it's going to happen. Why waste time?

Thank you! Trouble is it has got too big and difficult to navigate as well... So roughly what is happening is that I will take down some of the older projects and make a gallery of completed items for things like the Posh Frocks, some of the wedding stuff, the quilts, and the sewing machines. I'll also have to do a rolling program of this on newer projects that go up. I'm trying to keep all the teaching of techniques stuff and the resource lists as they are not so heavy on the pictures.

I'm also trying to make it easier to navigate without adding too many links and graphics as the graphic and photos really take up the web space! There are a couple of HUUUGE new projects to go up, so something has to give unless I pay enormous amounts for it. As it is, to get the package I need to keep it going I have to pay about £100 more per year than I am paying now! :(

Kate, I don't know if this will be useful to you, but I have my hosting done by these guys, I pay $9.95 USD for 2000 mb ( 2 gb) of web space a month.

This place is 5 miles out of a sort-of-adequate supply town (hardware and car parts, poor groceries), 50 miles from Albuquerque's much better stores. A pair of 20-yr-old Honda Civics at 35 MPG won't cut it when gasoline gets rare. And my '51 MG TD sporty car, 7 dirt motorcycles. Grow grain, get a still, teach them to drink alcohol? Need more than

13" of rain for that! Electric car might do for short haul, could recharge from solar if I add more panels...

Oops, forgot this is sewing, not homepower. Sorry.

get 500mb

Judicious resizing of images via photoshop should/ could be possible to get the overall volume down, too. Are you using SSIs to make updating easy on yourself?
