wew williams

greetings, my wife and i have recently moved into her dads old place and amongst his stuff is what appears to be an old New William's sewing machine with the cabinet. apparently it was purchased at eatons-college street store in toronto( we are in michigan). i'm not sure to its exact age. the cabinet looks original too. is there somewhere i should look for a serial number? anyway, i thought that some folks in here might have some info on this very cool old machine.

thanks chris and leslie

I'm not familiar with the machine so have no idea of where to find the serial number, but check out

you may find some information there. If not, do a Google search for vintage sewing machines and you should find several sites. Emily

We're mostly a discussion group about sewing rather than sewing machines, so you may few if any replies. You might try Googling and see what comes up. I looked on needlebar.com and found this:

One of the best places I have found for info on old machines is the We Fix It group on Yahoo. Most of us here have old machines, and many still use them so any help you need just ask. ISMACS is good for pictures but is not great for in depth info. Mr. Needle Bar has loads more but the Yahoo groups really get into the machines. We often discuss old machines along with lots of other stuff here. Kate has some nice ones too as do many other posters.

's College Street was the main Eaton's store. The Christmaswindows were a must see for decades. Not much left of Eaton'sanymore. It was purchased by Hudson's Bay/Zellers corp a few yearsback and many of the stores were closed. Eaton's' machines wereusually badged Etonia or in later years Viking. Your machine wasprobably made in Quebec, Montreal was the manufacturing plant and thecabinets were made in another part of the province. Do you have thecoffin top? It is a square lid that fits on the machine rather thanhave the machine fold into the cabinet? Sounds like you have awinner.

According to Carter Bays, New Williams was a badge name used by an unknown manufacturer. Do you have a web site where you could post photos?
