What a joy

I think I mentioned a while back that DGD is creating a special dress for her 8th grade promotion. We have been working together on it, and I have some pictures up:

I wish I had been smarter/less judgmental 30 years ago, when I was teaching my DDs. Blair takes to it like a duck to water, but I think I've also grown some patience in the interim. ;-}

Isn't she going well!

On the granny thing: MY grandmother was infinitely more patient with her grandchildren that with her own children. My mother was constantly surprised at how well she interacted with us and what she did with us. She started me off sewing, but had really put my mother off with impatience! I think it is partly the separation of a generation and partly that yes, we do get more patient as we gain more experience.

I managed to teach James to sew quite easily, but I did have the advantage of LOTS of teaching experience before then, of various different age groups, and he had his first sewing lessons with me in school with all his classmates. By then he'd already learned to thread up various machines when he'd been helping me set up to teach a number of weekend courses.

My grandmother (my dad's mom) was pretty close to a couture sewer....my dad said that when he was growing up, she would go to the runway shows in NY, as well as stand in front of the dept. store displays and sketch the "latest designs"....then would come up, make up the patterns and sew for the wealthy women in town. Unfortunatly, she never had an interest in teaching me to sew......

Your granddaughter is very very lucky...as are you. All the quality time you two are spending together she will remember.

(and best of all, the dress is going to be FAB!)

She is! She listens carefully, and asks thogtful questions, so I know she's taking it all in. She translates what she hears to correct techique. AND hse doens't mind doing the fussy bits. ;-)

All very true. My mother learned to sew from her grandmother, too. It may have something to do with the love-'em-and-send-'em-home thing as well. DGD and her mother butt heads a lot. ;-} Mom was a perfectionist, but managed to teach me and I love it. However, my sister does not enjoy sewing at all.

I have never been a certified teacher, so I didn't learn that skill-set. Experience with my DDs did teach me a thing or two, however... ;-}

My mother always seemed to know what the upcoming fashion was going to be. I don't know how she did it, we certainly never had access to New York or Paris. But several times, she made us clothing which appeared in the fashion magazines a few months later. She also made clothing for several very wealthy women in our location.

I'm so lucky, my DDs chose to live in this area, so I see my grands often. I love the time we are spending on this project, it's our third major effort (other than doll clothes) together. Here is the first:

I see that link didn't work, for some reason it was truncated. Here is the correct URL:

Wow - she's really got the hang of it! The pattern is great and I can't wait to see the finished product on her.
