What is that rule again?

I forget.......

Whats the rule about prints? Small person, large print, or Large person large print.........or.........oh boy, my head is spinning now........

I am just not sure. Help please?

(Rambling Section, Skip if not interested!) I can't believe how little things can confuse me. I bought a bunch of fabric today for some clothes, and found some silky purple with medium/large pink flowers on it. I thought it would be great for me, but now I am not so sure. It would for sure be great on me as a party dress, but I am not so sure about it as a blouse.......maybe a halter top.......either way it was only $4/meter. I also made some mommy & me skirts, but I am still working on the babies skirt. I should get a pic of myself and the kids, how cute! At least this way if we wear the same outfits people will know who they belong to when we go out!

TIA

Small person - small print, large prints overwhelm us vertically challenged people. Of course, there are always exceptions to that rule!

My rule is wear what YOU like and makes you look good. If you adore the large print, make a flowing skirt out of it to wear with a plain top.

I have to agree with Kate. I made a stunner or a dress (simple, long, halterneck wraparound) out of a fantastic abstract rose print of a black mesh fabric. I wore it, I carried it off, and I think I'm shorter than Kate!

Michelle,

I think it all depends on what you think looks good. ;) How's that for a non-answer??? lol There is a really nifty article in the latest Threads about large prints:

can't find the article online, but maybe you can dig deeper. It talksabout using large prints and aligning the motifs just so around your body. But not matching them like you would normally match a print. Might be worthit to see if you could find a copy at the grocery or something. I will tell you what I do with prints. I'm little. 5'4" and now a size 6 RTW. (whoo hoo!!!! I worked hard to get there, so I'm not shy about proclaiming what size my behind is. LOL You can smack me if I get too obnoxious. heh) I am also really short wasted. So large prints on a blouse would overpower me. My DMIL would say "that is wearing you, rather than you wearing it." So if I want to use a large print, I put it on a skirt. I keep to small prints on blouses. And right now the thing is floaty, feminine skirts with these huge prints. So the fashion trends have caught up to me. LOL

And you post those pictures of you and the girls! Can't wait to see the mommy and me outfits. Those are so much fun. My DD is 13 now and will only tolerate outfits that are "sort of close." lol I did dresses this last summer for us. They were different styles. But they were the same color. Her dress was a lavender linen. Mine was the same color but my linen was embroidered. That's as close as I can get to matching with her. ;) But! She has my face plastered all over hers so we match most of the time anyway. lol

I'm the same height and travelling in the same direction in size - down to a 14/16 bottom half from a 24! I LOVE my big wild prints for long, flaty summer skirts - plenty of breeze room!

My son will occasionally wear the same print as me - if I let him choose it! ;) A 10 YO boy with fashion ideas... What *is* the world coming to???

That reminds me of that one Fred Astaire movie where Ginger Rogers was wearing this large print dress that the motifs OBVIOUSLY and BLATANTLY didn't match in the back and distracted even my boys -- it was like one big flower almost carefully/deliberately placed over each buttock cheek. See this pic for the dress I'm talking about:

mean, how unattractive could one get?

Yikes! It's the attack of the amoebae! So much for "if I just put on a plain top it'll tone down the flowers on the skirt"! LOL! :)

Yeah, and if it didn't look good on Ginger, just think how it would look on one of us ordinary mortals! ACK!!!!!!!!

Tell son and ex that my FIL, an engineer who built RADAR during the war, not only makes his own trousers, but also trousers for MIL, and skirts and suits for her.

The only thing I could think of that would have been worse than the "strategic placement" (NOT!) of one motif over each buttock cheek was if the top had been made the same pattern and they had "strategically placed" one motif over each breast. ROTFL!!!!!

Son will be impressed - ex flabbergasted. Ex can shorten own trousers, but method would make you cringe (it does me) Son has used a machine since age 4 and can machine knit too. When he isn't killing things on the pooter or playing footie.

You took the words right out of my mouth Doreen!!!

One of the things the article in Threads said NOT to do was to try and position motifs on body parts. They said because it will "accentuate" that part. What I'm pretty sure the author meant was "it will look really tacky if you position this so that each "bun" has a huge flower on it." LOL Well....we have visual proof that's right don't we? ;)
