What's Your Favorite Paper Pattern Company?

Here in the UK I get the magazine, and I tend to buy them on their Buy one, get one free' offer. I only pay full price of the customer wants one after I've sent off that issues coupon!

I'll have to agree here, for the big 4, I'd have to stay with Butterick/Vogue, and the order here varies by what i am making. If I just want to pop something out *now*, give me a Butterick. If it requires more style, then Vogue. I'm 6'0" tall, so I have to alter the bloody heck out of everything anyway. I don't know why I bother to even buy patterns.

Anything that I have *ever* seen made from a McCalls pattern looks like a 6 year old made it. Their fitting model must be Sponge Bob Square Pants! (He escaped from years of captivity in McCalls fitting and drafting department to get his own cable show!) Simplicity always looks kind of tacky too.

Jumping in right in the middle gleefully... ;)

It's hard to pick one favorite. Kind of like music. ;)

For something really nice, like a formal or a suit coat, or just something that has to be Top Notch, I run to Vogue. I've never had a problem with them as far as sizing accuracy. I like that the pattern instructions don't hold your hand and take you through all the steps you really should know before you tackle a project of that level. (as the youngest child of 4, being "talked down to" always ticked me off. I think that has a lot to do with how I like the instructions in Vogue.)

If it's something casual or something for my children, I have two favorites. First place goes to Butterick. They were hand in hand with Vogue for long enough that I think some Vogue-ishness rubbed off. I've never had a problem with size on their patterns. And they have a new size range for children's patterns. It's a plus size. My DD is very long waisted. She's built so that her top half is the same measurement as her bottom half. (nape to waist = waist to ankle) This new size range has eliminated my need to lengthen the patterns on the "shorten or lengthen here" line. Which saves me time. They also have a lot of fairly trendy lines in the patterns.

Now, for casual and the kids second place goes to New Look. I do have to sometimes do some size altering on their patterns. But not very much at all. I always double check the measurements on the tissue paper, but it's usually pretty close to where I need to be. All their styles are very up to the minute. They also use fairly quick and easy construction techniques. I really like the size range on the patterns too. It's getting to the point now, that I can buy one New Look pattern and know I can use it for me and DD too. (which is great, since we all know that patterns aren't as cheap as they used to be!!!)

Now, another favorite, and I do mean Favorite is Textile Studio also Loes Hinse Designs. Used to be one and the same. Now, Loes Hinse has broken off to do her own line. Textile Studio is now run by Marsha Day (it used to be a joint venture between the two women.)

The first link will take you to Loes Hinse site. The second will take you to the Textile Studio on one of the sites that carries them.

Really easy and fast construction techniques. They use a lot of RTW techniques that make construction go really quickly. They only thing I have to watch for on these is length. If I were 6" taller, they would be perfect on me. But at 5'4", I usually have to shorten them. My favorite skirt (I've made it about 4 times now) is the Loes Hinse "Swing Skirt" long version. Very cute. I have these great black leather boots....so I keep making skirts to wear with them. lol My favorite of them all is the stretch suede/moleskin one in an olivey brown. :) I don't really think it qualifies as an obsession with the boots that I keep making skirts to wear with them....do you???? lol

There's my nickel's worth. (that was too long for 2 cents! lol)

I like Vogue because the designs are so much nicer. Nothing more, nothing less. Just terrible, terrible, fashion consciousness!

Hello, everyone.

Although I design and sell my own patterns, when my wife wishes me to sew up something for her, we usually end up looking at the Burda catalogue or modifying one of the patterns we bought for her from Burda.. They always fit her well, include some nice finishing touches and just plain look good.
