Yards of crushed Velvet for man's coat?

How much much fabric should I buy to have a thigh length mans sport coat made to measure by a tailor?

I want to buy both crushed velvet and regular velvet for smoking jacking type coats, although a bit longer length than normal.

Responses appreciated.

You don't provide enough information for an accurate response. What size are *you*? How *wide* is the fabric? Here are a couple of possible patterns for your project:

Vogue 2367 fabric requirements range from 2-3/8 yards to 3-7/8 yards, depending on size (32 to 48) and fabric width (45" or

60").

7988 view C requires anywhere from 2-7/8 yards to 5-1/8 yards, again depends on *your* size, and the *width* of the fabric.

of those pattterns show yardage for fabric with a nap, which velvet has. Your *tailor* will be your best source of accurate information, anyway. And he/she will also be your best guide on interfacings, linings, buttons, shoulder pads, etc. HTH,

I asked him the same questions when he posted this request for info over on AGF. For whatever reason he's being weirdly cagey about providing any additional info and yet expects you to put on your "mindreader hat" and pull a figure out of thin air.

Y'know....I really love helping folks figure out projects, so do most of us around here. But it just torques me when they don't "get" that I am not Madame Sharona and can't hold the email to my head and give the answer. lol

So sarp, if you can't give us an idea of what size man these jackets are going on, don't ask us to figure it out for you. Go to the tailor you want to make the jackets. Let him/her measure and then you will know how much you need.

---yeah, I'm cranky today. It's 100* F and about 2000% humidity. It's getting on my nerves.

The Great Carsini (darn, that's not right, but I can't ember the name Johnny used for his soothsayer shtick) would probably be able to give him/her an answer! ;-)

Yeah, that's what I told him/her, too, but looks like s/h/it is a drive-by poster. :-(

ROTFLOL! So, you gave one of those handy garden-crystal coolers in the works?

Beverly, very happy that the temps here have returned to a sensible mid 70°s.

I have to wonder about OP's veracity. If s/h/it is *really* going to engage a "tailor", why not put this decision in his/her capable hands?

Beverly, yeah, cynical....

He said his tailor is in Thailand and speaks no english. That he was going to personally deliver the fabric, and pick out his pattern when he got there.

Now that's really funny! You even linked to the same Vogue pattern I used here in trying to guesstimate. Wonder why he felt the need to start a new thread here, after he received such good advice in alt.gothic.fashion???? Maybe he's just a troll....

It's been awful here (awfuller than normal-summer) the last couple of weeks too. Before setting out on yesterday's once-a-week errand run to town, which as usual required getting in and out of the car at about eight places, and the a/c never cools the interior down inbetween times), I dug my homemade cool neck band out of the drawer. Soaked it a couple minutes and put it in a ziplock bag in the small cooler that always goes with me. Sure did feel good to sock it around my neck each time I got back in the hot car...wish I'd remembered it sooner!

the reason is that i have not had time to get back over to the fabric store to check on the width sizes of the bolts.

and I wanted to wait until all the responses came in before responding.

if this process upsets you, you don't have to post any further.

And yet you had the time to start an entire new thread *here*.

Nor do you. Seems to me that you are quite snippy for a newbie to this group.

Yeah, I thinks that's it..."Karnack the Magnificent" IIRC. What a *funny* routine that was. I have some of the compilation tapes and DVDs, I have to be careful to empty my bladder before watching them. ;-)

Thanks for the websites.

I would be called a 44 short for a conservative cut sport coat.

but I like them a bit roomier, so I may go for 46 short.

the website with the 3/4 coat is interesting,

but it takes the idea more to outdoor wear than I was thinking.

I was still in the smoking jacket stage.

Get over yourself. While I am not as experienced as some on this group I am quite competent, and already spent time trying to help you. And I have a great deal of respect not only for the other group member's professional skills, but for the value of their time. A review of the ground already covered was entirely appropriate.
