Yeah !!!! first one done

I just finished my first shirt , ever

Wow , what a hassle, but worth it anyway.

Ok it isn't quite finished, I decided not to put on the buttons on the cuffs, simply because I am not going to wear it anyway. You may ask why I am not going to wear the very first shirt that I ever sewn ?

Think about it... :-)

Oddly enough I actualy did much better then I expected, but I ran into some real problems when I got to the cuffs (actualy the same problem that I had with the collar base but it was a little worst because I couldn't repair the damage).

No worry, it is still wearable, I just won't because it just isn't nice enough.

I told the lady at the store I was making a shirt for my garbage pail and it is just what I did. I learned quite a bit and I am now ready to go ahead and make my first shirt to actualy wear.

I already have the fabric ( just washed it actualy , it is drying right now), and right after I have consulted with this lady I know on certain points ( namely the cuffs and collar, but also about fitting) I will get started on a new one.

This is the one thing I hate about following someone elses instructions ( ie the patterns) since I had never done it before I was in sort of a hurry to get to the end and had little idea of how each step was suppose to turn out, and so I had to redo everything at least twice ( and I realy hate doing that)

Now that I have and know, I will be more patient with the next one

Wish me luck, or better yet , wish me skill

Glad it's going well! I'm about to buy a whole heap of fabric for turning into garbage myself! I use it for toiles (muslins to our USA friends) - mock ups for proving and adjusting pattern fit, lining for corsets, whatever! I like to have a handy supply, and the customers pay for it in the long run... If you divide the cost of your trial run by the number of shirts you eventually make and wear from this pattern, it will prove very cost-effective.

Good job, and great attitude. You will fit in here just fine. ;) Just look at all the things you've learned from this shirt. You might want to keep it just to look at from time to time. Then, as you make other, much more fabulous shirts, you can remember what not to do. :)

Wishing you great luck with the next one. The skill you will get on your own, just keep plugging away.

Thanks everyone for this thread. I am sewing my way through a large heap of $1 a yard fabric, to teach my self to be a better sewist, and to play with designs! Some of them will be pajamas, and some will be cut up as test runs for other projects. One day I took a level look at my fabric stash and giggled. The next day I jumped in with both feet. My house is a mess, but all in all it is a great feeling.
