Dear Pauln,

A couple of years ago, I made fleece sleeping bags for my three grandsons, and made coordinating robes and pajamas. They loved them, and the littlest one (now 4) still carries his sleeping bag around as his security blanket.

Costumes? My three-year-old loves dressing up in the orca and shark costumes at the aquarium.

PJs! Last year I made PJs for my nephew, with some neat 'bugs' fleece I found at Walmart. He LOVES them because he loves bugs!

Yup ! Or....Sponge Bob or whatever they are "into." Another idea is to give them "Sock Monkey Kits" that you put together yourself including the stuffing and everything they would need. It would work best if you were able to also spend an afternoon with them helping them make them. I did this with/for my boys one year and they LOVE the monkeys. If you want a bigger project...make them beanbag chairs in special fabric. If they have to be mailed....you can send them empty and tell them where to locate the filler beads and how to fill them. First thought: backpacks- to hold their collectibles, so lot's of pockets, zips, snaps, etc.

2nd idea: a floor pillow-I'm thinking denim on one side, minky fleece on the other, embroider their name and something that they are interested in, pocket to hold books or game boy....this one I need to do for my son! Diana in Utah

Thanks for all the suggestions! Still deciding, but leaning towards fleece robes for the after bath chill

My boys 7, 9, and 11 are all wishing for bathrobes this year. Now I need to find the time to make them when they are not looking. Pjs are always well received - the older ones prefer pj pants to be wore alone or with t-shirt. I am learning that pj tops are for younger boys - big boys sleep without a shirt or a t-shirt.

I just made a polar fleece robe for a friend's son for his 3rd birthday. The little prince Loves it! I have an embroidery machine too. So I put his name on it about where a breast pocket would be. He is so thrilled with it. His mom said he puts the robe on then crosses his ankles, leans back on the pillow and smoothes the robe down his legs. lol Also no one is allowed to tie it closed for him. I don't think anyone is allowed to touch it....or look at it for long. LOL Just to let you know that might be a really well received gift. ;)

Oh! And my best robe-for-a-child tip: Attach the belt to the robe at the CB. That way it can't be lost in the laundry, etc. I set my machine for the side of a button hole (or a short satin stitch) and sew across the belt that way. I usually do two rows so it's on there firmly.

For the floor pillow, would you get a cushion insert the right size, or would just a large rectangle of foam be okay? I'm thinking the foam might be a little lighter in weight, but the cushion insert would be softer. I've got some stuff around to make one for my DS and I'm considering the options on what filling to use. melinda

Hi Melinda, Check your Yellow Pages for foam suppliers......a great filling is chopped foam. They usually sell it in big bags and it doesn't cost too much....and makes a very comfy filling. Joy in Michigan

Melinda, You could always wrap the foam with some batting. HTH Diana in Utah

Thank you! We only have one supplier of foam and rubber products locally, no problems there, and following on from another posters advice I think I'll make an insert out of calico/muslin so the cover can be washed by it's self.
