Using Punch to Set Eyelets

Hi! I'm new to this board.

I was at a Stampin Up stamping party recently and the demonstrator used a Fiskars 1/16 punch to set her eyelets instead of using the little hammer. I have a special card I needed to make today for this week and I bought a Fiskars 1/16 punch at Scrapbook Your Story in Springfield, IL and tried the same technique the demonstrator used at the party and it would not work. Does anyone know if the Stampin Up Fiskars 1/16 punch is manufactured differently than the ones available to the general public?

Thanks so much!

Yes, it is. But something else...we are told to NOT demonstrate the eyelets that way because it doesn't always work (not even when using our punch). I have the old fashioned eyelet setter that you can buy at a fabric store and I use that when I want to set and eyelet close to an edge and want it to be done silently. I do not do this in demonstrations. For the record, I don't mean this to "bad-mouth" the demonstrator who showed you this. Some don't know that we aren't supposed to do that.

I understand this eyelet-setting technique will only work on soft aluminum eyelets and not on the harder brass eyelets. It is difficult to tell just from looking at an eyelet which metal it is made from and it often varies from color to color from the same retailer, including Stampin Up. So, I suspect the reason it worked in demonstration and not in practice is a difference in eyelets and not in punches.
