can i rejuvenate a felt costume?

Hi folks,

I am hoping someone can help. I have an elf costume. the vest (doublet) is made of felt. it is still quite sturdy and not thin or balding. and it is clean. BUT it is very nappy. lots of little fuzzy balls and strings attached. is there any way to rejuvenate this? brushing? pressing? starch? trimming with a scissors? electric razor? burn it and have a new one made? any advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Brian,

This is called pilling, and can be removed with a fuzz buster (very inexpensive and handy), or if you can't find one, use an electric razor.

There is a little gizmo for 'razoring' fuzz off fabric. You can find it in fabric notion department. It works very well. I think it's called a 'de-fuzz-it'.

You can use a safety razor if you don't have an electric one. A disposable one will be fine. I haven't shaved a hole in anything yet...

I'd de-pill before, as the pressing as part of the dry cleaning process may squish the pills into the fabric, leaving drpressions when you later de-pill.

thanks to all who posted. i used my electric razor on a discreet part of the costume and it works great. one more question for a simpleton. will it make a difference if i de-pill it before or after dry cleaning?

thanks again.
