Brenda,

They are very simple. Just strips of fabric about 4 to 6" wide by 12 -

20" long depending how fat and full you want them.

Sew into a tube, turn, thread with elastic. Sew elesctic ends together. Then folding under one end of the tube by 1/2", tuck the other end in by

1/2", and sew across.

This is not mine, but I saved it from a list somewhere, sometime:

Cut a strip of fabric about 4" wide and about 24" long. Then cut a piece of elastic 6" long. Now, here's the cheat. Put a safety pin in one end of the elastic like you are going to run it through a casing. Fold the strip of fabric right sides together so that the long cut edges line up. Lay the elastic on top so that the non-pinned edge meets with one short end of the fabric. Stitch across that short end, catching the elastic and up the long edge. Turn the tube right side out. Slide the elastic out the open end. Lap the elastic over the other end and stitch it down. Fold under the open end like for a hem. Tuck the elastic and the closed end inside the open end and stitch it closed.

This goes a bit faster than making a tube, then inserting the elastic, stitching the elastic to itself then closing the circle up. I use my serger till I get to the point of closing up the scrunchie. Then I have to use the sewing machine. I do that just for speed.

Does anyone watch Ground Force on BBCA? I wish Charlie had some scrunchies. She drives me nuts flipping her hair back all the time. ;-)

For really nice scrunchies: Cut strip of fabric 5 inches wide by 20 - 24 inches long. Cut piece of 1/4 inch braided elastic (or knit, if that is all you have on hand) about 10 inches long. Tie the elastic into a loop using a reef knot. Leave at least

LOL! I can agree with you there. I watch the programme here in the UK where it is made. I have to say there are some in this country who are more concerned (women) / interested (men) (in general I hasten to add!) by her lack of a certain underwear garment.......

I've never noticed! Must now remember to check for .... garter belt? corset? pantyhose/tights? Oh bother! If it isn't obvious and distracting, I guess I don't care.

It could be worse - it's not just her hair that's unrestrained.

Bra, dear. Don't tell me you've never noticed the fellers' eyes glued to her unfettered norks?

Truly have not noticed. Although I will admit that I don't understand the cultural taboo about women showing anything above the waist. Or below, for that matter, but it's the top that puzzles me. I conform to the rules, and wear tops but in my heart I don't understand why it is essential. When my kids were babies, I used the receiving blankets, etc., to cover them and me when they ate in public, but still am puzzled about why this is such a big deal.

Do you think that contributes to the show's success? ;-)

Joanne,

It's not that she wanders round bare chested or anything! She is always decently clothed. I guess what amazes a lot of us ladies is that she doesn't wear a bra. She's a gardener who does a lot of heavy work and lifting (she's a strong lass!), and whilst not huge in the bust department probably has more than enough to want and need the support of a bra. As a consequence, the guys enjoy the sight of her joggling and wobbling about, getting cold etc... etc.....

Sarah

(Who once saw a ex-hippie 60's/70's wild child not wearing a bra in a rather see through jumper - her nipples were nearly at the waistline... shudder!)

I didn't wear one, either, until the past year when I developed a skin condition and found some comfortable bras - the combination of the two was a critical issue. But you have to admit, western civilization has a mammary fixation. ;-) There's even a famous song -- "Thanks for the mammaries" that was some famous guy's theme song. 0:^)

I've tried many suggestions on how to make scrunchies. The best "instructions" that I got were from Lisa Reeves, who posted her formula to alt. sewing. Here's what she suggested: Cut the fabric 20-22 inches long and 4 inches wide. (1/8 of a yard will make two scrunchies). Sew the fabric together, right sides together using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Cut 8 inches off of 1/4 inch elastic. Turn the tube right side out. Using a safety pin, secure the elastic to the tube as you insert it. Next, knot the elastic ends together. (Knotting the ends is much faster then sewing them and is very effective). Afterwards, take on end of the tube and cuff it to the inside. Tuck the other end inside the tube, and just sew across. Ta da! The perfect scrunchie!

Ah yes....Charlie's knippled knockers have been a great source of discussion and ogling since she started on that program. I believe 'they' have their own fan club and website. I just chuckle, I remember my brothers and their friends tuning into The Mickey Mouse Club to watch Annette's sweater. Of course that was in the 50s when mere 'bumps' were still mysterious and fascinating. Some things never change and probably never will LOL I'm with you on her hair flipping, flinging thing though.....that girl needs a scrunchy, a ball cap, a chop stick or SOMETHING......drives me nutz to watch, I want to reach into the tube and clip her hair back!
