paperdoll embroidery

I have a paperdoll/clothes CD embrodery for my machiine. But I do not know what to back the doll with or how to make the clothes stick on the dolls after the clothes are stitched out. Any advice? Thanks, Wanda

Wanda,

Embroidery designs for paperdolls and clothes sound like so much fun-- now you don't ever have to grow up!

This isn't exactly the same thing, but a few years ago I made my DGD a small, nearly flat cloth doll and some clothes, all of which fit into a little pouch thingy. I believe the flat part of each garment was pressed onto a couple of layers of fusible interfacing, to give it body. The doll had one small piece of velcro sewn to her tummy, and a corresponding piece of velcro was sewn to the interfacing before it was pressed to the dress or whatever. I wasn't crazy about sewing velcro on poor dolly's tummy, but there didn't seem to be an alternative.

Here is a picture, in case you can use the idea or a variation of it:

Wanda,

Yes, I think the case is a great idea, keeping everything together and easy to carry to church, for instance, to play with quietly when the sermon seems soooooooooooooo long. I tried to find my pattern to check some of the details, but it's hiding or I gave it away, or something.

One side of the case functions as a 'bed' for the doll; her little attached pillow is sewn on, with eyelet around it. Here are a couple more photos, in case they might be helpful.

Doreen, That is the cutest thing I have seen for little girls in many years. If you don't mind, I would love to make something similar for DGD, who is just 7. Of course, hers would have to have a horse somewhere in it. Wanda, would you mind telling me where you got the CD program for paper dolls? And would it fit any machine? Besides DGD, I have a niece that is only 1YO plus 4-5 great nieces for whom I sew occasionally. They range from 2-10 years. Emily

Emily,

A horse, what a great idea! What about a stick horse...a cloth head with yarn mane and ribbon reins, glued on to a piece of a bamboo skewer or something similar? Wish I had thought of that for my DGD! (too late now, she's almost 16)

Or maybe a chopstick? I just get mental visions of kids poking out eyeballs when I read the word "skewer!"
