Viking Designer 1 safety recall for faulty power supply

Loading thread data ...

About 4 or 5 years ago or so Viking had a recall on one of their models of sewing machines, also priced around $5,000. It, too, was an electrical problem. If I remember correctly the recall was a danger of electrocution.

Geez.

I went back and re-read the recall and I'm wondering if this is the original recall from several years ago and they thought best to make it public again?? Interesting!

Anyway, thanks!

The 1/1+ machines seem to be snakebit... CPSC announcements are: Dec 1999: Designer 1+: defective power cord/transformer connection; shock risk 11,000 machines Oct 2002: Designer 1: power supply smoking/catching fire 1,100 machines Feb 2006: Designer 1: power supply arcing; 3 fires 5,500 machines

Kay, The 1+ is different than the Designer 1 (The 1+ was the Viking TOL before the Designer 1 came out). I don't think the 1+ has ever had a recall.

When I was considering the 1 and 1+ just about the time of changeover, the dealer I was talking with said they were built on the same chassis... that's all I know.

And yes, there was a 1+ recall in 1999:

for shock riskfrom loose pins on a power transformer. Bernina had the only other recall of a sewing machine listed in the cpsc search function, in 1978, for type 213 pedals overheating:
