What is a double stitch?

I looked in my one sewing book I can find, I looked online. I'm not talking about crocheting.

Hopefully its doing two parallel lines of stitching, one within the seam allowance, one on the seam line, because that's what I just did.

So, enlighten me, in case I'm in the dark.

Me thinks that wouldn't work in this situation. This is for reinforcing a hidden seam in a backpack. They say nothing about needing a special needle or zig zag.

Could you give us the whole sentence? It might contain a clue.

Well, the whole sentence is "Double Stitch."

Now, let me give you the sentence before:

"Sew ripstop front bottom onto front panel, right sides together. The front pocket should be in between the two pieces. Double stitch."

The "front pocket" is a mesh pocket that will hold things on the outside of the backpack. It needs reinforcing.

Sew it twice with a straight stitch, stitching lines right on top of each other, for extra strength.

Sounds like "Stitch twice" to me -- in other words, I think you did what the pattern told you.

Would have been triple stitched if I'd been doing it -- I have a terrible time keeping three things lined up, so I'd have sewn the pocket to one of the pieces, then sewn all three.

On the other hand, those seams were probably *straight* -- when I have three layers to sew in garments, usually all three curve, and when one of them curves the opposite way to the other two, "permanent basting" is about the only option.
