A workholding dilemma

Yep. That's fairly apparent with a quick look at them- and it's kind of nice to see how poor the finish is. Makes me think maybe I'm not as bad at spinning as I had thought. I'll probably make a couple if I run across any thin sheet bronze for the right price, but I have a lot of other more important priorities.

That may be true, but it really isn't any of my concern. My job in this is to trim them down to a smaller size so they *look* new. He's been happy with the two I've finished so far, and I figure he's the guy whose opinion counts in the matter- not mine or yours! Could be he's just using the refurbished ones for screwing around out in the garage, and saving the good ones for when he plays in public.

Couldn't tell you- but if there was a way to solder, braze, or weld them, I doubt he would have even asked me about cutting them down. The guy can weld just about anything to anything and make it look good, so I'd imagine he's already given it a try and it didn't work out.

In any case, that's not my department at all. The only services I'm offering anyone with these suckers are spinning (if someone else is paying for the material) and trimming. I don't have the time, money, or inclination to mess around with them much more than that.

It looks like I'll be getting a huge turret metal lathe sometime in the next month or so anyways, so trimming cymbals is unlikely to be worth my time when compared to making precision steel parts. (Precision being a relative term, of course- the lathe looks to be at least 70 years old, and probably a has less than perfect ways at this point- but there's always a demand for stuff with a slightly more open tolerance than a shiny new CNC machine can provide.)

Even if it's junk for metal work (though I doubt it is) it'll make a heck of a bowl turner. A hunk of metal that size ought to be able to handle just about anything I can hoist up on to it without so much as a tiny wobble.

Hi Prometheus

You know there is a reason why the good cymbals do cost a fistful of money, they're not made from just a sheet of brass, if it was that easy there would be more cymbal makers and for less money.

I would not waste my time on a project like that, just my thought on it.

Have fun and take care Leo Van Der Loo

You're probably right there- I have no doubt I could make them look nicer, but considering that I have no idea what people are looking for in them sound-wise, it'd likely be a waste of effort.
