Cheap Jet Minis

No, it will not need waterlox. I wonder if it will even take waterlox at all because LV is a self lubricating wood. In fact you could store the wood in water for 200 years give or take. Like the logs [they] had found sunken in one of the great lakes, which can be found for sale on the 'net. Still perfectly good lumber and made all the more beautiful from [the] natural process that results from being in the water for so long. I forget what kind of wood it is.

Umm... by the way, that is a fabulous example and strictly a beautiful piece of work! Thank you for posting the picture, I saved it. I picked up a piece today just to feel the weight again, awesome. Can't afford it though, at $10 a pound.

IIRC, the great lakes wood is mostly maple and other mixed hardwoods. Pretty expensive when they started selling it, but I notice that the local Rockler was recently discounting it pretty heavily.

Companies that haul it up from Superior have decided to haul less, possibly to increase the rarity factor. FWIW, it looks about the same to me as what I leave high on the firewood pile for a year.

As to the cup, if water was transported when the tree was alive, it will use the same method today unless you stop it.

FWIW, CWG had LV shorts (4/4 stock, nothing big enough for turning anything substantial alas) a while back (may still have some--haven't been in in a bit). I picked up a few of them. Nice, nice stuff. Haven't quite figured out what to do with it yet other than putting it wherever I need a non-marring chunk of metal , but I'm sure I'll think of something. Might cut a few pen blanks for people I _really_ care about. Interesting aroma going through the jointer--fairly strong and kind of spicy, but not quite like anything else I've smelled.
