I don't need another place to 'go visit'. There are too many of those already.

Thank you for considering a more appropriate alternative venue for the essays. I do appreciate it. And if you have a big fan club and you draw them all to your blog your musings might turn you a couple of bucks now and then, so to speak. Green shavings are the best kind, right? :-)

While I confess I don't read them, I certainly don't mind their presence. I have a big key and an active finger, as do most other users clever enough to be on usenet so the presence of yours or any other's essays (particularly since they're on topic) can't possibly be a hardship on anyone.

I think the absolute wrong thing to do would be to dilute the collective wisdom to scattered venues throughout cyberspace which may or may not come to the attention of those most needing it.

Your musings have provided insight that is sometimes lost on the utilitarian aspect of what we do. You cause me to actually think and ponder what I am trying to get out of my turning experience. I agree with Mac that your "Musings" provide everyone with the option to read or not. I always look forward to what you have to say because your essays help me to see how you think and where your point of view is from. So to post only to a blog would deprive the rest of us in the NG the ability to see and know you without having to visit a pre-constructed page.

Keep 'em coming Arch. I never read blogs, and don't care to start. Over on the far right of the message listing is the size of the post. If it's long I can just skip it if I'm too tired to read it. Even the longest text post here is probably much shorter than even a simple web page, with all the various graphics and pictures and whazzat that seems to go with them. They're on topic, they're amusing, and they elicit a sense of camaraderie w/in the group. How droll this would be if it was strictly 'rub the bevel'.

Anyway, that's my .02 worth, and since I've been here since the inception, adjusted for inflation, it's present value is at least $.05238 (just over a nickel for the math impared)...

Stay here. I check this NG fairly regularly, but don't want another site to go to. Plus, this NG can easily be found by someone looking for information. As with all NGs, this one rarely stays on topic long and many different ideas and discussions have sprouted from the original "musing" thread that are easily available to everyone.

And in that line of thought, anyone that searches and finds this group would be exposed to a lot of good information and ideas, with some of your musings being a contributing factor. And again like all newsgroups, they need all the quality folks they can get.

There's plenty of techincal stuff in this group as well as rec.woodworking - lots of How To and plenty of How Do I. What often is lacking is the WHY - the thought provoking questions that lead to interesting insights, or at least interesting observations. What is it about what ever we do with wood that fills some need and is - occassionaly - so satisfying.

I sometimes get tired of reading one and two line posts - or a detailed description of how to sharpen a particular gouge. These posts have value - don't get me wrong. But I enjoy insightful posts that describe universal truths we have but can't put into' words. And it's comforting to see that others have odd experiences with their tools and equiptment, confirming my hunch that there are insidious (sp?) plots they're hatching - sort of the Al Quaeda of the tool world (anyone up for a pre-emptive strike on Robert Sorby and company/cell? and then go after Delta! Of course we won't be able to call our elite strike team Delta Force but what's in a name).

So keep up the musings. I look foreward to posts that have more than one paragraph. One liners can be funny, but I prefer George Carlin's approach.

Yep, Kevin was a crusty old curmudgeon here when I first arrived in 1998. Seems like Lynn, Leo M, Arch, and some of the other regulars were already established (anchored, rooted, etc.) here also.

Hello Arch

Arch I have given my opinion on this before, not the blog as such, but the splintering of the group, also who's going to find all the different groups, sites, blogs etc. It's already so that we have to go to several sites to kind of keep up, and then we have some servers not serving all sites and/or you need to be invited and keep your opinions within there parameters etc., we all loose that way IMO. In this also fits your musing, yes keep them coming, we all need to have that grey matter tickled once in a while, and have different looks to and opinions on, given here for all to weight and ponder upon. If I have to go all over the net to find these things, it just won't happen, also as I said above, if we keep snipping everything up there won't be anybody left or at least there will be fewer. Oh well
