Finally burnt it up!

After almost 4 years of daily use (at least 5 days a week) , the motor on my

200.00 Harbor Freight lathe quit on me. I'd have to say I got my $ worth out of it. Went to their page yesterday and saw a newer version of the same lathe for 499.00. Much heavier cast iron legs, indexing spindle with lock, digital spindle speed readout, lever speed change, 14" swing x 43" bed, Headstock rotates and locks in position at 60°, 90°, 120°, and 180° , 10 speeds, from 670 to 2900 RPM and Forward/reverse allows for outboard bowl turning. I know some don't like the Chinese made lathes, but the last one was such a great value, I had to get this one to replace it. I may replace the motor on the old one in the future, just to have a 2nd lathe. Nice bonus is that all of my chucks and stuff will fit the new lathe perfectly. no replacement costs. With shipping to Alabama, the total outlay was $606.98. In ten days I'll be able to stop "jonesing" for spinning wood and flying sawdust! lol

Bob two things, well three.

What is the sku on the lathe?

You do know you can order another motor, probably very reasonably, from their Technical Support, don't you? I always keep a few of their 6" face plates around to mount various jigs on (sanding disk, vacuum chuck, etc) and used to have to order those from Tech Support but can order them on line now. The other thing I have ordered from Tech Support is the Miter Gauge from their table saw. Works great for a fixed jig (i.e., box joint, small parts miter, etc)

Where in Alabama do you live? I am 30 miles South of Montgomery and headed for the AWA meeting in Birmingham this morning.

Hi Deb! I wish I'd checked the group earlier, I'd have loved to gone to that meeting if I could have (I'm not a member) and maybe met you for coffee. I'm only 17 miles outside of Birmingham just off of I 20 in Moody. I figured I could get a new motor and may do that eventually. It's been a great first lathe, but I'm taking the opportunity to move up a bit. This one is about 3x as heavy and one of my small dislikes about the old girl is that she's too light and turning out of balance stock was a major job. I've rounded out many a piece with one leg on the floor and the other wrapped around the leg of the stand to keep her from "walking" out the garage door! Next time you get up my way, give me a shout!

Ralph is correct, it is this one

Bob, I just checked with HF and the motor is $81.00 with NO s/h. That means I might be able to convert my Jet 1142(which it looks like a direct knowck off of) to a reversable lathe for $81.00.

Question, what is the shaft size on the motor? It could be that I will not even need to buy the motor half of the Reeves drive. Not a bad deal.

The only down side is about an 8 week delay while they order the motor.

Bob, as tomorrow AT&T is dropping their News server and I have a question about your HF lathe motor. What size shaft does it have?

I am thinking about upgrading my Jet 1442 to a reversable lathe by buying the motor on the HF lathe. Since the price is only $81.00 and no s/h, it is highly doable. The only thing is I need to know whether the motor Reeves pulley is interchangagle with the Jet.

Please reply to my e-mail addreess

BTW, coffee sounds good.

Thanks

I don't know if the motor on the NEW lathe is the same as the old, but I WILL know after 11am on Thursday. Man, that was quick!

I went looking for an image of a Jet 1442, and I was shocked to see how much alike the Jet is to the HF and less than half the price! I'd bet the shafts are the exact same size, but I'll let you know after Thurs for certain.

Thanks Bob, will be waiting to hear. The whole reason is so I will know whether I just need to order the motor or motor and motor pulley.

- But since my ISP does not have a clue as to what is going on with their AT&T server - their words - I will have to get back to this group via another means. In the meantime, please send the info to my e-mail

Thanks again

AT&T has stopped carrying newsgroups - use teranews or news.eternal-september.org - both have free servers
