I'm looking for a spindle with bearings for a homemade lathe/headstock

Wanted to try my hand at a homemade lathe just for bowls, so i will have little ot no tail stock. But for hte workhorse part i need a spindle system with bearings that is of a standard size to accept popualr face plates/chucks and such.

Can you guys direct me twords one?

This lathe will be really basic, the spindle will be mounted on top of a thinkc and very heavy layers of steel as the head stock, shooting for something around 100 pounds for the head stock area, maybe more. So i want a rock solid spindle.

I would suggest buying "pillow block bearings", they are readily available just do a Google advanced search for "pillow block bearings". Most any machinist shop can fabricate the shaft from stock threaded for you favorite chuck or face plate. The other end of the shaft will need to be machined for a pulley (diameter and key). Make sure the machinist knows what the shaft is going to be used for and that "run out" should be kept to a minimum. I would suggest that you also have the shaft hollowed and a morse taper (#2) in the threaded end if it's affordable. Larger pieces of wood are not in balance and you will probably want to add a tail stock later and a morse taper will come in handy to turn between centers to true up a piece. I have a lathe made in this manner except the structure is laminated hardwood. It doesen't have a morse tapered spindle or tail stock, wish it did. Hope this helps. Hamp
