Jet Mini 1014 lathe and Vicmarc vm100 Chuck

Hi.

Can the Jet Mini Lathe 1014 cope with a Vicmarc Chuck VM100 or even the VM120?

Having looked at this group and others I see others have used a Supernova chuck but I have not been able to find if someone has used a Vicmarc. I believe the Vicmarc to be heavier (and I am told better if can afford it).

Thanks.

Asking about which scroll chuck is "better" is like asking if chocolate is better than vanilla. Once you get around the $200 mark, most chucks will perform about the same.

So without commenting on the other chucks, I can tell you that the VM100 will easily work on the 1014 (the mini). I have two of these chucks, and they are machined like a swiss watch, and strong enought that you can genrate all the holding power you need. One of the chucks has been in use for almost 10 years, old enough that the body wasn't even chromed during manufacture. The only difference in the way it works now and when I bought it is that it is a little smoother in operation.

I honestly don't know what it would take to wear it out.

Others have their favorites, too, and I am sure their chucks perform as well.

Although you could chuck up the VM120 on your lathe, why? The 3 1/2' chuck will easily handle pieces 12" in diameter, and the lathe you are referring to only has a 10" swing over the bed, and with the toolrest banjo under it, only about 7". There is no advantage to haning more metal off the spindle of your lathe.

The VM100 is the correct choice between the two for the mini.

I have exactly that combination (VM100). Works just fine on mine (1014).
