Hello all,

I've finally got a good start on my Gingery-esque metal lathe, with some modifications. Since I work in a machine shop, I'm milling all the parts out of 1018 steel, rather than casting them from aluminum per Gingery's instructions (and machining the ways, rather than hand-scraping all the parts...) I figure it never hurts to beef it up a bit, and I'm unconvinced that tapped holes in aluminum are very worthwhile in the long haul. That, and I'm taking moderate pains to make sure it looks nicer than the one on the cover of the book!

While I'm basically sticking to the plans otherwise, I am rather convinced that tracking down a headstock spindle, with *or* without step pulleys would be a whole lot easier than trying to machine a morse taper on anything I've got access to at work or home and retrofitting it at some later date.

In a perfect world, I wouldn't mind aquiring a 1" x 8 tpi spindle with a #2 MT so that I can share accessories between the Gingery lathe and my big Delta. In an extra perfect world, the drive spindle from a Midi lathe would be about right. Since this is not actually a perfect world, though- I'd be happy to track down anything that will accept one of the standard Morse tapers.

So, anyone have a well-appointed junk drawer with something like that for sale in it? Any leads for inexpensive lathe replacements parts would be welcome- I *could* order one from Delta, but I'm afraid of what they'd be liable to charge me, and not having used one of these homebrew lathes before, I hate to put a $100 part in a $50 toy!

And of course, if I need to, I can just stick with the plans and use regular cold-rolled bar stock, but that just seems a little chintzy to me.

I bought 1x8 headstock and tailstock spindles from Grizzly as replacement parts. If I recall I paid about $30.00 for both together. This was 5 or six years ago, for a wood lathe I made from wood. mike

Thanks for the link, Leo- I'll see what they want for those, and it may be the way to go.

Ah... I didn't even think of Grizzly- but I'll take a look in their catalog. Maybe they've got gears and pulleys hiding in there as well... While I'm fairly confident I can hob the gears and turn pulleys as needed, there's a lot to be said for picking one's battles.
