I know Richard Raffan has made thousands of his version, but I can't locate any step-by-step in my Raffan books. Perhaps it's on one of his videos.

Thinking of a scoop as a modified goblet may help. You can get a ballpark roughing size for a goblet by figuring the volume of a paraboloid:

For example, if you'd like a hollowed paraboloid shape of 4" maximum _interior_ diameter (D) and holding 2 cups (16.8 cu. inches/cup > 33.6 cu. inches/2 cups), you'd need the turning to be right around 5.35" deep (H) for the _interior_ .

Depth (H) of a paraboloid = (volume/Dsquared)(8/pi)

This assumes no cut out for the scooping shape, so perhaps allowing an extra 1.5 inches (H) or so of straight cylinder (adding another 9.4 cu. inches > a little more than 1/2 cup volume) ahead of the paraboloid will offset the loss of volume when you contour the mouth. Then don't forget to figure out how much wall thickness you'd like plus the thickness at the bottom plus the length of the handle and, as they say, Bob's yer Uncle.

Volume of a cylinder = pi*Rsquared*H
