newbie needs advice

I recently bought my first lathe and am looking to augment my turning with another tool. I'm wondering what tool is most beneficial: a band saw or a joiner/planer. Thanks Dennis

Didn't we answer this question already in the past couple of days? Maybe it was a different person or you didn't get the responses.

Anyway, the most beneficial of the two tools (since you combined the jointer/planer as one) you mentioned to augment a wood lathe is the bandsaw, in my opinion. It's a great tool to prepare wood for turning.

I wouldn't be without my jointer, planer, and even my joiner in the woodworking shop either. I just don't use them nearly as much as my bandsaws for woodturning. In fact, darn near never. Hmmmm there's an idea...... how about using the biscuit joiner to join the segments in a segmented turning together? I don't do any segmented stuff myself but I'd give it a try just to see if it'll work.

My condolences on the first lathe. Same thing with your (bandsaw?) purchase. It's JUST the beginning.

Hope it helped,

- Andrew

Not a problem at all, Wizard. Stick around any place for very long and the questions get recycled pretty regularly. There's only about 5 really different questions regarding woodturning anyway. Everything else is basically the same stuff.... much like there being no real inventions beyond a sharp stone and beer. Everything else is basically the same stuff or not really needed. Have a good weekend!

If you don't have a table saw you should get one of those before either a band saw or a jointer. Not sure by the way the question was asked.

Hi Wizard, Not to worry about repeating your question. It will be repeatedrepeated- repeatedrepeated as rcw is properly used as an open and friendly woodturner's forum by newbys, oldies and inbetweens. Andrew's post is right on, but another strength of rcw is that reasonable disagreement is expected. I reasonably follow this storied tradition to scream that Andrew is totally wrong, ill advised and is spewing misleading information to the unsuspecting. BTW, I heard that he uses scrapers! I know for a fact (ie. personal experience) that three cornered wheels and Scotch whisky are clearly new inventions and much needed ones too. I would block Andrew's posts, but I don't know how, and besides I enjoy his posts too much and grudgingly learn an awful lot from them. And another facet of rcw: no matter how nasty a thread is, you are expected to deplore it vehemently, all the while reading it avidly with pious disgust. ************* >G< TIC :-)

Get yourself a good 4WD pickup truck, a heavy dudy winch, a big chainsaw, a helper, a tractor would be nice, Anchorseal, and some folks say LDD. Nashville, GA
