Reminder

Turned my Jet mini VS off with a spindle between centers. Left an inquisitive young child in the shop for just a second while I went into the house. Came back within a minute. The child was happily watching the spindle revolve at 1500 rpm. Whew! Memo to me and maybe some of you: Most on-off switches are NOT enough.

Fortunately I'm old enough that all my children are grown. :>)

I have a little 2 year old that likes to go into "grampes" shop and play with the switches on the tools with or without him around so I unplug everything. Once she can open doors they will stay locked but I will still leave all the tools unplugged when not attended.

My grand kids KNOW not to touch anything in the shop and usually follow my "hands in the pockets" rule, but I try to lock out things when kids are around.. It's a PITA to pull the little yellow handles out of switches, but I try to remember them when kids are around..

One feature that I really like on the Shopsmith is that the power switch has sort of "ears" around it to prevent accidental starting, and holes in the ears for a padlock... I've got a 20 year old habit of putting that long allan wrench that comes with it through the holes when I power it off..

My kids are grown too. But now there is the grandkid. She is 3 1/2 right now and we have had to start dead bolting the doors because sometimes she just goes where she wants to go, even if it is out the front door. She doesn't like going into the garage (shop) right now because when she was out there once (while her grandma was carrying her) one of my tools made more noise than she did, and she didn't like that. I also keep it a little dirty out there (there is a 2" thick pile of sawdust under the table saw as I write this) and she doesn't like that either. Don't know how long that will last though.

Good advice. We have our 4 year old grandson here and even though I trust him to stay out of the shop, one can never be too careful. Thanks for the reminder.

ALWAYS good to have a reminder like this Arch. I have seen so many accidents over the years that were simply that... you can never be too careful.

I know have a nephew (7 yrs.) that wants to be like Uncle Robert and thinks he should be able to use any tool he feel comfortable with. And he is one busy boy... really busy. So it is really important to keep an eye on him all the time, and when we are working on something together I make sure he is no farther than arm's length away from me. When we leave the shop, even if it is for me to let a little coffee out, I find a reason for him to come back into the house with me.

Thanks for the reminder.

Robert
