Sorby 45 deg shear scraper

Has anyone used these tools to clean up the inside and outside of turned bowls? They have a shaft which orients the small shear scraper at a 45 deg angle once you put the shaft flat on the tool rest.

TIA

I have one, it works, is it easier then just tilting a scraper, yes. Is it worth the money??? I dono, but it works

I don't have one, but I don't understand why tilting the scraper to the angle you want is an issue? what do one of these things do for you that a twist of the wrist wouldn't?

my best guess is that the tool in discussion has a flat side on it, so that the desired angle is achieved with no guesswork nor a twist of the wrist. It may be the case of a solution in search of a problem. tom koehler

That is correct, the tool has a flat shaft and the small scraper/cutter is at a 45 deg angle to that flat. I was looking for opinions on the use of this tool and on shear scrapers in general to do clean up of fuzzies and tear out on bowls. I'm going to revise my opinion on this tool

I did a production run of small (4 to 6 inch) bowls today, Taking them up to shear-scrape, then going on to the next bowl

I found that for these small bowls, this tool could reach inside and do the scrape, in one continuous motion, in cases were no other tool I had would. I found this tool to be vital when doing a shear-scrape on the inside of small Calabash form bowls.

I also liked only having to rotate the cutter (round, not four-sided), rather then taking the scraper back to the sharpening station

For small bowls it is useful, for small Calabash form it is almost essential
