The Woodturning Show on PBS

The next episode of Woodturning with Tim Yoder on PBS that's showing out here is going to feature Alan Lacer. I had sent him an e-mail for some advice and he was very helpfull. It's going to be on sharpening so I'm going to be watching for sure plus recording it. Jim

The last one had Stuart Batty turning an off center bowl in a rectangular piece of wood. Not a beginner show. He was using a Stubby 1000 lathe.

Dang. They don't show that on our local PBS station anymore. Sure wish they did. Maybe I'll email them. I usually donate a bowl during fund raiser auction time - maybe that'll help persuade them.

Or get the whole turning club to email them! Sure wish I could find back episodes on Hulu or Netflix...

Kevin,

Around here, central Pennsylvania, the regular PBS channel doesn't carry any of the wood working shows any more either. However PBS has added another channel called CREATE which does. You might check your listings to see if it is available in your area. It may be listed as your regular channel no. plus .2 or .3. Our PBS channel is 3, and CREATE is listed as

3.3. And Comcast puts it on 242.

Batty is an awesome turner. That was, imo, by far the best show Tim had on so far. His skill and technique at the lathe is beauty in motion. His grandfather and father were professional turners, and he has been a professional turner since he was 12! That has got to be unusual in itself today, and it shows. I need to see more of Stuart. Here is a youtube link to who he is:

I'm going to look for more of his stuff. Tim's previous show was possibly his worst, where he turned a 100 lb log into a 6 oz bowl. I'm still shaking my head over that one....

Kevin, I record them on DVD but usually delete them after I watch them. I can try and convert them and maybe get them uploaded some how but don't hold me to that. It would be a new computer skill to learn but I'm game. Maybe the on coming up on sharpening. Jim in ID

That's because it's NOT PBS, it's PBS-Create, The episodes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, four times a day

The Stubby is Tim (the hosts) personal lathe

That would probably violate copyright - I wouldn't want you to get into any trouble on my account. I'll just talk to the local PBS station and see if they can't slip it in somewhere. But thanks though...

I don't have cable. I pick up KTOO (PBS) over the air. But my folks do

- maybe I'll have my Dad start recording it. Thanks for the pointer...

Might inquire if they are broadcasting additional over-the air digital channels, which your present setup (due to age or due to converter because of age?) isn't picking up. PBS stations have been among the most enthusiastic early adopters of the (no longer all that new) digital broadcast spectrum possibilities.

I personally only got a new TV a couple of months ago - much as I do with brave new computer stuff, I like to give these things a few years to work out the bugs and get the price down to a reasonable level. 20 years (~old TV to new) has made a bit of a difference.

Our old TV decided to die just as the conversion was taken place. It was probably 35yrs old. Good timing. Jim in ID
