tools and oddments from Mr Leo van der Loo

I have built a handle(3/4 inch steel pipe) for the oland tool, but even more usefully for me, it provides a very easy idea of what exactly an oland tool is, I was still not quite sure on some points about it, but after seeing and playing with it have got a clearer idea for building bigger/curved/angled types. I must admit to being most curious about the gouges, they have almost a shallow \/ grind, which puzzles me a bit, althought they work quite well, better then many of the shop tools.

Hi Reyd, Got the "oddments", and the gouges, yes they are weird, grind them with a long nose and you can use them as a spindle gouge and a short and steep grind makes them a bowl gouge kind of, the steel is fine, I have 3 more that I some times use but they will never be my favorites.

If you make angled or curved tools make them so that the the cutting tip is in line with the tool shaft, Darrell Feltmate has a good write-up on making what he calls a swan neck tool, and a lot of other good tips and advise, it is a very informative site to visit and consult.

You are going to be busy for a while now, and I hope you will have a lot of fun with all your new "oddments"

Have fun and take care Leo Van Der Loo

I am, grinding the scrapers over the next couple weeks. I have 2 choices in grinder, my low speed one, with small grey wheel, but I can grind the teeth etc off with it, because it has no guards or toolrest, which I like better. or I can use the schools white wheeled ones, but they have stupid guards and such on them, so I cant grind flat. I must admit to being puzzled by the piece of threaded steel, with 2 nuts and an odd thing on it. It beats me what it could be used for.

I known, when I run out of teeth to grind, I'm SOL as far as dressing the wheel goes.
