Anna Maria, Barbara and other Italians..

Congratulations with a fantastic opening ceremony at the Winter Olympic games! I even stopped knitting! (it is a good relaxing exercise for people like me, who believe that you HAVE TO have something in your hands to get perfect relaxation!)

The ceremony was beautiful and exciting!

Thank you Aud!

While all teams passed by I have been thinking of all my friends around the world, ad of all of you, my dears! The Norwegian and Canadian teams were huge!

I didn't like it so much at the beginning but it become better and better with the time. Absolutely loved the "skiing man". I really felt for the little girl singing the national anthem. It's very difficult to perform it in a not rethorical way and she coped brilliantly! Just hope she will NOT reminded for all life. Sort of: when you sang the anthem at the Olympic Games...

Thank you for the link to a beautiful photo of our dear mr. President!

Here you have the main Italian newspaper:

The Canadians sent their largest team ever - 197 athletes!

That was incredible! and I got a big kick out of those acrobats in white climbing all over that screen, eventually forming into the dove.

For me, the best moment was Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma. Even at 70, he is wonderful!! I wish he could have sung a longer version. He looked wonderful in the long flowing black cape.

Pairs figure skating tomorrow!

Yes, but the controversy will be arriving when the Gretzkys arrive on Sunday. They are involved in a federal case of illegal sports betting in New Jersey and the press will be all over them. Someone - their lawyer? - should advise them to stay home.

Thanks, even though I didn't see all of it. My husband, very unusual for an Italian man, has zero interest in any kind of sports, and wanted to see something on another channel. I watched all the teams enter and a bit of the opening show and then my husband asked, "May I change the channel now?" So I returned to my crochet. I can't crochet and watch TV at the same time, because I'm very nearsighted but my near-vision prescription isn't good enough for crochet. So I have to either take off the glasses to crochet or put them on to see the TV.

Ahem, what ever happened to "innocent until proven guilty" ??????? Wayne is the "spirit" of the Canadian hockey team, and I doubt there are many Canadians who would want him to stay home. I think the press should just butt out and leave him be.

Your husband is not alone: my DH is another one LOL Or better, he does like sport, but he doesn't like competitions. I share his point of view, so we watch sport, not so often, just for the fun of it.

Ciao,

Mine too, thank goodness, despite being raised in the land where hockey is a religion.

"innocent until proven guilty" is a tenet of the justice system and it's certainly not how the press works. Innuendo and allegation are so much better don't you think??? Remember that poor guy who was initially accused of the Atlanta Olympic bombing? He was completely crucified in the press and IIRC received death threats as a result of his alleged involvement. He was later completely exonerated. So where were the front page headlines then? Not to mention some sort of apology for literally nearly destroying his life just because he was a bit odd.

Eimear, who doesn't watch the Olympics any more
