Branching Out Scarf

Beautiful scarf! Thanks for sharing. I wonder if you could widen it to make more of a shawl? Oh dear, another project in mind. Carol in TN

Hi All.

I am so excited! I just finished the Branching Out Scarf from Knitty. I used Blue Sky Alpaca & Silk and # 7 US Clover Bamboo needles. I think I may make it again using # 8's. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, and even though there are mistakes throughout, it passes the Galloping Horse Test.

Congratulations, Hesira. As I remember, this is the pattern you first attempted with another yarn. Although it's hard to admit defeat, I think you make the right choice by choosing a different yarn.

Yes, Jan, it is the one I was trying with Douceur et Soie, but not only was I trying lace for the first time, and using unfroggable yarn, I was trying to double the motif to make it wider. Talk about biting off more than you can chew! I was going to make this scarf one way or another! Now that I'm more familiar with the pattern, I may try to double it in the future.

Hesira, what a lovely scarf, I am so impressed. I would love to knit something lacy, but so far have only made terrible messes. I guess I just have to keep admiring all the lace knitted here. It is a beautiful scarf well done

Thanks Carol.

Originally I did try to widen it to make a shawl, but it was a little more than I could handle at the time. That's what Jan & I were talking about earlier in this thread.

There are 19 active stitches, and 3 border stitches on each side. I wanted to double the scarf so I doubled the active stitches, but not the border stitches, and added a stitch between the 2 motifs. That makes 45 to cast on. But I imagine you could make it larger by adding

19 + 1 for every increased motif. This works out well, but my problem was inexperience with lace and a finicky yarn, so I tried it as originally written, and there you go! I guess I need to learn to begin at the beginning.

How very pretty! I had seen that pattern and loved it, but I'm a crochet person, not a knitter. You'd think there would be a pattern somewhere for a lacy *crocheted* scarf, since three are so many crochet doily patterns, but I haven't found one yet. I'm not good enough to adapt a doily pattern to a scarf ... yet.
