Changing size by changing guage

I have a vintage pattern for a fairly simple sweater from a 1970s Mon Tricot. The largest size is a 14 and I wear a 16-18, although I will double check the measurements. I'm wondering if I can enlarge the sweater slightly just by changing the guage, and knitting the rib as a test. The sweater is not especially fitted and would actually show off the stockinette/reverse stockinette triangles better if larger than needed. I've knit lots of scarves and have socks on the needles, but haven't done a sweater since the 1980s, and then I only did one. Madelaine

Yes it is one way to enlarge the size of the finished product. Many of my 1940s patterns have instructions for enlarging by one size by using a larger needle size (so it was common practice once). But you should swatch to see that you like the finished fabric - it may or may not be too your liking at the larger gague.
