Did anyone here ever knit or crochet with a Ball of various rolled up cut ends ,,, i mean you pre roll a piece of each wool ,,,, than travel or take it and just knit or crochet it like it is one yarn ???? mirjam You see i am still pondering about my Travel work ?
I tried that but in the end it was the ends that defeated me. Whether to knot and have the work full of knots or not to knot and have the work full of weaves...I never solved it satisfactorily, but still the idea intrigues me. Perhaps to knit a blanket or scarf that will be lined or a tube so the ends don't show on the back side?
There's a patturn at spunmag.com, I think, that has a sweater made up of short bits of yarn tied together with the ends hanging out. Sorta like that Wiggles yarn.
Yup, but only once. Made a little shaggy purse that people love when they see it but I don't find it my cup of tea at all. It's at the consignment shop; if it sells I suppose I'll admit it was cute. I pulled all the ends to the outside to have allover fringe. I did a top border and handle with a single colour (no fringe).
This reminds of the knitting workshop I did with Kaffe Fassett. We worked with short lengths of yarn. All the wool was put in a pile in the centre of the room on a blanket. Then we were told to pick a picture post card from his collection. Then Kaffe told us to pick up 20 colours of yarn to knit our interpretation of the picture. He said that if 20 was not enough to pick 20 more. We only had to take small amounts of the colours. Then we had to knit weaving the ends in as we went along both starting and finishing yarns.
I chose a Japanese garden post card. At the end of the workshop he pinned all our efforts up on a board along with the card. Then he proceeded to evaluate each one. He said I had got the riot of colours in my piece and he and Brandon his assistant agreed it would make a very nice border for a jacket. I still have the sample and will try and get it up on my website Shirley
I made a couple of scarves that way. One I just tied on the next yarn when I came to the end of the yarn. I left all the ends hanging, though I did trim them to a reasonably uniform length.
The other I knitted sideways and left the ends as fringes on the short ends of the scarf.
Amazingly people bought *those* at a Christmas bazaar, but wouldn't buy the hairy mohair scarves, or the (simple) silk lace scarves. Go figure.

Reply to the list as I do not publish an email address to USENET. This practice has cut my spam by more than 95%. Of course, I did have to abandon a perfectly good email account...
I have but not just with random ends. I took all the same length ends and started with a tail and ended with a tail, knitting the scarf lenght wise. I made two scarves, for the girls for Christmas, got rid of a lot of odds and ends that way
Thank you Jane , ends are no problem to me , i do it all the time in Free Form crocheting anfd knitting ,, i only wondered how it would feel ,,, taking many colors with in ,, on their Balls will make it Bulky and not handy ,, cutting off tails ,, might become messy thus rolling ends up in one colorful ball seems the answer , but i never worked in that way ???? mirjam with stupid questions ,,,
Rather than thinking of them as "the most woven dishcloths ever made," I'd say they're the most beautiful dishcloths ever made. Such colors! They are absolutely gorgeous!
Mirjam, if you think your question was stupid, wait till you hear mine....... !!
I know how to weave in all the ends after finishing the piece, and I know how to do this with the ending yarn as I work. However, how would this be done with the NEW end? On a piece I did recently, I alternated for several stitches, using the "old" yarn and the "new" one for every other stitch just to see how it would work. This secured it very well, and then I wove in the ends; but I like in crochet how I can weave them in (both "new" and "old") as I work. Can someone tell me how to do this with the "new" yarn end?
Eve :o)
PS - I am asking about knitting even though I didn't say so!!!!
I do this all the time, scrap knitting,or crocheting knots all over the place!! pillows, bags, blankets .I need more patterns for scrap knitting/crocheting, please send them to me! Jenny
One way is to just overrlap the two ends for a few inches and knit/crochet. This gives some extra bulk. I don't find it a problem usually. If I were doing a lot of it in a small piece I'd try the following way. Trim each end for a few inches so it is about 1/2 as thick as normal, overlap the two ends and then knit or crochet the ends at the same time. that way you don't have a lot of extra bulk. Shana
