Friday Excitement! Also, stores closing in Canada

There has been some excitement here on Friday.

I've been stocking up two big suitcases with crocheted items to sell, and have sold a few things, and have gotten great reviews (wow!) from people I've given things to free of charge or as gifts. And as of yesterday, my things are being carried at a local crafter's store on consignment! I'm so excited! Strangely, it's also very frightening to be putting my things up for public review and consumption. The store is called the Tickle Trunk, and they took most of my purses, most of my hats and ALL my wire crochet. I've labelled my stuff as Mayberry Creations....what do you all think of that name?

I now have to get busy and restock my suitcase and make an appointment with the provincial heritage store to see if their manager likes it (their staff loved it, but now it's all out!). Does anybody else go the consignment route?

And, of course, being from Newfoundland & Labrador, I have to mention....Team Gushue brought home Gold for Canada in Curling!! I think the entire province was screaming in joy....Katherine, how was the celebration up your way? They even closed schools for the afternoon for the curling, but we won't get into my opinion on that :) what with Katherine being a teacher and probably enjoying the sudden

1/2 day off!

As a final note, the 90 Lewiscraft stores across Canada are closing soon....apparently their owner couldn't find a buyer as he retires. Which means I'll be stuck with Michaels or Walmart for mid-range yarn. This was a little low point for the day. They'll be liquidating starting immediately; I picked up some things already. Bad girl, I know, I know.....

So lots of news around here, and now I see that Katherine is pursuing a Test Knitter project, too. Friday was a good day! :)

Hi Michelle.

That is interesting info on Lewiscraft. I'm in St. Catherines, not too far from Niagara Falls and we have to rely on Wal-Mart and Lewiscraft for supplies unless we venture out to the Hamilton/Burlington area. And now we're losing Lewiscraft..ughhh! I'll have to pop over and see what's available in our local stores.

As for the consignment. I did that a few years ago with a g/f. The store we were in was called Crafter's Marketplace (Hamilton mountain area) ...they have since gone under I believe. We had such a good time...lots of fun. We made a little extra cash on the side and met a lot of people. I made a decision to give it up for a while when I became pregnant with my 3rd child at age 40....4 yrs ago. But I"d love to get back into it, life has settled down somewhat and I've managed to get my life into some sort of routine, although it can still be crazy at times ...FINALLY!

Where are you in Ontario...am I correct in saying...close to the "London" area...sorry it has slipped my mind.

I wish you best on your consignment adventure...it's lots of fun!

take care donna from ontario, canada

LOL THe celebration was fabulous! But we didn't get any time off, as we are having a mid-winter 4-day break this weekend anyhow. I was at the curling club watching and screaming with everyone else. Two of the boys got their start right here, you know, at the Carol Curling Club, where I used to curl, too. Not nearly at their level, I hasten to say!

Congratulations on the craft sale. I remember the TIckle Trunk fondly. In fact, I wore the sweater I bought there last year (remember?) to a function last night.

Sorry to hear that Lewiscraft is closing. I liked going there in my travels

Huge hugs and congratulations to the Gushue Rink!!!!!!!!!!!! First ever Gold in men's curling for Canada!!!!

And - today, in the women's 1500 metre long track speedskating - Winnipeg's Clara Hughes won Gold and Cindy Klassen won Bronze! That makes FIVE medals for Klassen now..... she is incredible. Winnipeg is planning a huge celebration when she and the rest of the Winnipeg Olympians return home.

I thought you got that sweater at Woof Design. That's the one with some type of scene knitted into the front? It was on a window display? Woof Design does all the lovely knits.

I will try to control myself at the Lewiscraft liquidation sale :) although I will miss them.

That's where I am now....the third child will be 5 Tuesday and life is back to a semi-routine state now that the toddler and preschooler stuff is over (he starts Kindergarden in September).

Sorry, I'm in Newfoundland, not Ontario! Although I did live up north in Ontario for a year when we first got married in 1994.

I know the consignment will be an adventure!

Thanks Michelle

Hello "Eastern Edge" I do not sell anything for the simple reason I do not make enough 9 being a lazy individual) but I must say I really do like the name you have chosen.

Congratulations of the medals for Canada - on that score I cannot help but mention a gold for Australia for some event and a bronze for a girl who had a knee reconstruction just three months ago - I often wonder where they find the snow here to practice - guess they spend a lot of time in your country or somewhere else in the Northern Hemisphere I do remember once that the toboggan team had practices on the roof of a car running down the car ramps when the store was closed !!!! Down here on our side of the border we are happy to have taken the bronze - first medal for US in men's curling. My family is from Minnesota and my mother's town was full of Scots who celebrated Robert Burns' birthday with a curling tournament - biggest day for that small Minnesota town. (her grandparents moved there from Scotland on their wedding trip and settled in Stirling Township, Minnesota. ) Like many area in the US, people from the same area tended to settle near each other - and the put some effort into preserving their heritage. I see the US skip was from Minnesota - wonder what part.

I always thought it was interesting that there were so many games around the world with the same basic aim - get an object (stone, ball, horseshoe or whatever) closest to a target. It is one of those things

- sort of like how many kinds of flat bread can you think of that could, if necessary, be cooked on a hot, flat rock. (lefse, tortilla, naan, chapati, etc. etc. ) I guess it is that unventing process we talk about -- people solving problems often hit on similar approaches with regional variations.

Glad the Canadians are doing well -- we are really looking forward to having the winter games just north of us in Vancouver. That will be really exciting. (We get up there from time to time as it really isn't very far from here - and the train connection is great.)

Thank you...it's a play on my last name (May). The squares I got from you last week were just lovely....I disagree that you're lazy!

Gee, I've never stopped to think about that....where do some of the warmer-climate countries practice winter sports? Obviously there are year-round 'cold' facilities but they can't support all the people training, can they?

Judy, he is from Bemidji according to the Minneapolis Star. It lists 5 team members from Minnesota. Even though I'm a Minnesotan, I have done no cheering for them as I have no interest in the Olympics.

Where is Stirling Township?

Stirling Township is near Mapleton in Southern Minnesota (not too far from Mankato) . My mom grew up in Mapleton.

I will miss Lewiscraft as well as it's the closest craft store to where I live and also there is one close to where I am currently working.
