Help to find a pattern request

Hi there all from sunny New Zealand.

I am hoping that someone in this community can help me find a pattern for knitting a ballet/wrap type of sweater for a newborn. I have lots of cardy patterns but I am finding that the wrap around style would be more practical for me.

Any and all help to point me in the correct direction would be great.

TIA Rach

I bought a book this summer with that exact sweater in it. It is Patons Baby, booklet # 500805.

There is a baby kimono pattern in the Summer 2004 Interweave Knits. I knit it and it is very cute but I'm not sure how practical the ties are (haven't tried it on a baby yet). You could probably work something else out with the same basic design, though.

Hi Laura,

I bet you will find out next year how good the ties work?

Sorry I cannot help Tia but a big welcome to the group and I hope to hear lots form you - I do not think we have anyone from across the Tasman here - we used to have one but I have not seen a post form her for a long time.

It gets lonely over her in Aussie Land - especially when you win the Rugby !!! God Bless Gwen

Did Australia win, Gwen? Congratulations! See, I would have known this if my mother were here.

Welcome to the newsgroup, Rach! Unfortunately I couldn't find a free pattern for what you are looking for (although I am positive that I have seen one someplace and just can't remember where now), but I did find a few URLs that mention it... and one showing pictures of it being made. So hopefully these will help you somehow. Maybe you can ask the girl making hers on her blog where she found/bought her pattern. I did find one page that is selling the pattern... assuming that's what you wanted. Anyway, I hope it helps! :o)

Hi Racheal,

Welcome to RCTY. I have a number of surplice sweater patterns that you might be interested in. I would be happy to send you, via email, pictures of the sweaters so you could see if you would like them. In the meantime, there is an Elizabeth Zimmermann pattern which is in Spun Out #43 from the Schoolhouse Press. You can see a picture of it here:

I have never heard of a knit along...but the photo is what I am looking for....would the pattern that is given, make up that sweater? Thanks for all the help and advice from everyone with this...

I think I will! I also think that all those buttons I have been putting on baby clothes are going to turn into snaps in the future. I just feel bad for all the suffering I have caused those parents who have received knitted gifts from me with lots of buttons!

You know, I still have the very first baby sweater I ever knit which was from the pattern you sent me. I have made it several times for other people but have never actually seen it on a baby so now I will have the chance!

Hi Racheal, I did not do the knit along with the group, so I am not sure if what is written is the entire pattern. There have been other knit alongs that I have participated in. Basically, a pattern is chosen, and everyone should have their own copy of it. Each knitter then picks his/her own yarn. You knit to get your gauge swatch and then follow the pattern, everyone doing the same thing. You can ask questions or post comments while you are doing this. It's a lot of fun!
