Hi everyone,

I sure hope someone can help me. I'm knitting this sweater

have knit the body of the sweater and the sleeves. Now I'm readyto knit the yoke, and will put the sleeves in place and work it all atonce. My problem is the berry pattern. I am totally confused as tohow to do the:

work 3 sts in 1 st as follows: P1, 1 YO, P1 and the P3, lift first st over third st and lift second st over third st = 1 st left

Do you think I'm going to have to make a trip into my LYS?

Thanks for any help you can give...Linda D. in B.C., Canada

P1, YO, P1 is making two stitches in one, and means just what it says. In the next stitch purl 1, YO, purl 1, an increase of two stitches.

Purl the next 3 stitches, looking at the P3 on the right needle from left to right, insert the tip of the left needle into the first purl. That is the one fartherest from the tip of the needle With the tip of the left needle, lift this stitch (1) over the last stitch on the right needle (3), do the same thing with the remaining stitch (2)

You have just decreased to two stitches you added with the p1, yo, p1.

This video shows how to lift the stitches, but instead lifting two at one time, you will only be lifting one.

The only advice I would add to that of DA is to take a separate pair of needles and ball of yarn and make a test swatch of the new stitch.

Thank you, so much for taking the time to reply to my question.

I did have a "light bulb" moment yesterday afternoon, and set up a test swatch, like Mary suggested. I cast on 36 stitches just like the chart shows for the pattern repeat, which included the pattern repeat on the chart, plus 12 stitches for the garter stitch border on the two fronts. Somehow or another I lost 2 stitches, so have pulled that out and will try again today.

This is such a great group!

thanks again...Linda D. in B.C., Canada

You probably missed a couple of YOs, a very easy thing to do. Garn studio has some very nice patterns, but they seem to loose something in the translation. Having charts does make it easier to figure out what they mean. DA

The best advice of all.

For years I did not do this until Noreen talked to me about how important it was. I had to rework every pattern for my family friends every time I make that a hat, socks, sweater or what ever. Even so I was using the same pattern.

We do have a great sight here Mirjam, don't we.

I am glad Dennis that Noreen convinced you to do it ? By the way anyone heard from her lately ????? having my copybooks has saved me hours of work later ,as well as having a Measure -paper for ideas ,,,, Yes this is a great site Dennis ...

Yes, indeed I had missed a YO. I think I must have just purled into the stitch instead of P1, YO, P1 into the same stitch, so lost 2 stitches.

Sunday, I set up a new sample, and have the pattern worked out...so simple when you know how :)

Actually, I do this all the time. I use page protectors, so include the pattern, all the info above, and the band from the yarn right in the page protector. It works great!

Yes, I sure do :) Now I just have to figure out how to do the decreasing. I've never used a chart before, so this is all new to me. Fun, fun, fun...

Linda , if you want to decrease 1 st , you can either knit [or purl] 2 stiches together . Or slip 1 k [or p] next st, slip the former unknit st over the knit one.

if you want to decrease 2 st ,,, slip one , k or p 2 together , slip unkint over the 2 together . mirjam

Hi Mirjam,

Thanks, but yes, I do know how to do the common decreases. I was referring as to how to decrease using this chart and the symbols. This is the first time I've knit a sweater from a chart. In this particular chart part of the pattern is P1, YO, P1 in the same stitch, so for decreasing you just P1, and that gives you two decreased stitches. I figured this out, but had it confirmed by DA via private email. I was quite pleased that I was smarter than I thought when it came to knitting...LOL!

Have a great day...Linda

Gosh, no, you didn't upset me. I just wanted to clarify that I do know a little something about knitting...just not everything :) I've knit for 40+ years, but never from a chart, so that is new to me.

Enjoy your day....Linda D. in B.C., Canada
