Intro and knitting question

Hi, everyone. A quick intro before I jump into my question. I'm a lurker here, for the most part, but I think I've posted once or twice in the past. I'm a longtime crocheter and relatively new knitter. Currently, I have five projects going: two crocheted afghans, a knitted prayer shawl (almost done), a knitted poncho for my niece, and a knitted sweater for my son.

I'm continually in awe of the expertise and willingness to help exhibited on this newsgroup. I'm hoping one of you kind folks can explain a pattern direction to me. It's the Hoover baby blanket featured in knitty.com. The URL is

. It's a double knitted blanket with a garter stitch border. The part that confused me is this paragraph: "A further caveat regarding the border: Since Garter and Stockinette have different row gauges, it may be wise to add extra border rows, particularly if you have a wide border. This can be done by knitting back and forth twice on the border at regular intervals [every 6th or 8th row]. Be sure that you add to the borders equally at each side however, so your blanket does not become lopsided. Mrs. Hoover is rather vague on this point, but invites the knitter to decide."

I don't quite understand what she means by "knitting back and forth twice on the border." How exactly does that work? I'm trying to visualize it in my head before starting this project (as if I needed another project!).

Thanks for any help you can give.

It means exactly what it says - knit to the end of the row, knit back on only the border stitches, turn around and work to the end of the border stitches, turn again and work across. Repeat the "short row" on the opposite border to balance things.

Hi Jules,

I don't knit any longer so can't help you, but what Wooly said to do sounds right to me. Welcome to this great group and come back and let us know if you made the Hoover blanket.
