Knitting a moebius.

Today I finished knitting my first moebius - a scarf and hood combined.. My husband has promised to take some pictures of it tomorrow so I can post them.

It has been a peculiar experience, albeit a most enjoyable one. When I cast on and worked the first row I did not think there was any way it could work out. Even Rob commented (when it was on the circular pin) that there was no way my head would fit through the hole and when I tried to explain to him how the one edge ran all around the outside and it would work out bigger than it looked he looked very dubious. He was as amazed as me when it was finished and fitted well.

I have a couple of friends who would love something like this so I think I shall enjoy making some more of them.

Again, thank you Mirjam and Aud. :-)

Bernadette spun a FINE 'yarn':

They're addictive, once you make one! I made a RUN of them a while back, like 15 of them! Glad you're hooked, grin! Noreen who thanks Mirjam also.

I've just finished a moebius scarf, I's like to know how to make a combined scarf and hood. Where did you find a pattern?

I didn't have a pattern, Mary, I made it up myself.

I wanted a lightweight one so bought some Sirdar, Blur (fluffy, but not too hairy) and made a swatch on 4mm needles. At that point I also chose a reversible stitch pattern which works repeats over 6 stitches and 8 rows. My tension was 12 stitches to 3.5 inches. (If I use that yarn again I will use a larger needle because I can tell from the feel of the fabric that it will need careful washing.)

From there I read up various moebius knitting pattern articles from the web that suggested allowing at least 20 inches extra on cast on to allow for the hood section. It seemed the best length for scarf and hood together was between 48 and 60 inches. I compromised at 53 and cast on 180 stitches initially, ending up with 359 after picking up the "bumps".

From there it was easy as you just keep knitting until the length is right. When it is finished, because it is nearly twice the length of a scarf you simply wrap one section around your neck and the other half around your head. The pictures that gave me the idea originally are at

have typed up the pattern for a friend who has never made one beforeas she wants to try, so it does contain links to various web pages thathelped me to understand how to do it. If you would like a copy youwould be more than welcome and you could ignore the links I've put init.

Bernadette.

(We're going to do the pictures later today).

Wow! 15 is alot. I'm certainly hooked, Noreen and I'm going to try out a crochet one in a while too - but first I must finish the jumper I started last November.

That was helpful about the piece of paper too. i think I'll copy your idea on that. ;-) Thanks.

Congratulations, Bernadette! Yes, it is a thrilling experience, to see how the work "take form". I look forward to see it!

I hope to start a new one soon, but just now I am working on two baby sweaters. My niece waits for her first child, a boy due this week, and so do a nephew and his wife too. It's difficult for me to imagine two newborn boys with grand-aunt Aud's moebious, so I thought it was best to be traditional!LOL!

Thank you Aud - it was fascinating to watch it grow and it was such a delight when I found it had worked. Yipeeeee!!!!. :-)

Congratulations on the expected additions to your family.

I agree it is better to be start off as traditional - it can always change later! I had that problem when my two boys were born as I had made a fine lace, crochet layette each time in case it was a girl. Gave them both away - the layettes, not the boys. ;-)

I really would appreciate that, thank you.

First I must finish the grandchild's socks, from a 1940s pattern on 3ply wool and 14 (swg) needles. One down, one to go ...

Thanks for this,

Mary

Ok now you girls have my attention and would also like to try one.....I have a coat that has a deep V neck and when it is windy and cold I have to wear a scarf....all I really need is something to cover that area to block the wind....and to keep my hair from blowing in my eyes so what you have described sounds perfect And yes please post your new projects

The stitch I chose is a lace stitch I found on a site showing Shetland shawls. It is similar to that one, Donna.

I'm just waiting for Rob to wake up from his afternoon nap to finish taking the pics.

What are you going to see? We went to see the History Boys yesterday (matinee showing). What a marvellous film. Alan Bennet was always superb at drawing realistic characters and that film has it all. We are planning to get the DVD so we can watch it again - we'll wait until the price drops a little though.

We saw the History Boys on Stage at the National Theatre in London. Haven't yet got round to seeing it on film yet. I think, unless it turns up an odd time locally, we'll wait until it comes out on DVD (which seems to me to happen about 5 minutes after first release these days!!) It will be interesting to compare the 2 productions Love & higs Christine PS Love moebius making, knit & crochet, such a useful garment and so much fun to make. Not too mention impressive to non knitter/crocheters!

I fell asleep while doing the sock this afternoon. I still haven't recovered from all that heavy walking in the highlands. Yawning as I type but must get on with the rabbit stew - and there's the pheasant to skin and paunch.

Life, eh!

I don't know - you youngsters! ;-)

I tease Rob about it because he is all of 7 months younger than me. It has worked well though, because for 7 months of the year I'm in charge and for the other 5 months we are equal. (indeed lol).
