Knitting Magazine advice

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking to buy a subscription to a knitting magazine for a friend of mine who is in her mid-20s. The problem is, I know nothing about knitting! I know I should ask her favourite, but I want it to be a surprise. She doesn't read any of them regularly, though (she just discovered that there was knitting magazines recently!) She wants something modern because she often complains about knitting books that have plain or outdated patterns in them. Also, I know she doesnt like the Vogue knitting mag. So, does anyone have any recommendations?

Cheers.

More people seem to like and make the patterns in Interweave Knits. You could look at the magazine websites and see which may look like something that might be her style. Is she in the US, btw, or out of the country? Some US magazines are pretty awful about subscriptions to another country, even Canada. They tend to be very late.

Second the vote for Interweave Knits. Of the Big Three (IK, Knitters, Vogue), IK offers patterns for usable, classic items. I've got IK going back to the beginning of time: some of the colors are dated but all of the STYLES are things I'd wear today. The articles are well-written also.

Vogue is too trendy: by the time you get something knitted (ankle-length car coat in angora? suuuure!) it's out of fashion and you've got a huge shedding money pit to show for it.

Knitters is...well, Knitters. Crappy patterns, crappy articles, crappy editing, crappy photography. You get the idea I'm sure :D

In the FWIW department the other Interweave pubs are also worth the money, should your female friend be a spinner, a crocheter, a beader or a person who does fiddly embroidery/crewel/needlepoint.

ScottC spun a FINE 'yarn':

ScottC. . . Interweave knits, or best yet, get her a membership to TKGA and she'll get Cast-On magazine. JM2C, Noreen

Ok, thanks for the info! She already mentioned that she doesnt like Vogue, so that's out before we even start :) I just found an Australian mag called Yarn that could be OK. I tried to subscribe to some others (US based) and they wouldn't allow it!

Lol nope, she's not into those things... she's only just started knitting a few weeks back, so she's taking things pretty slow at this stage! She's mastered a plain straight scarf and a beanie :)

Cheers,

Scott.

Hi! Thanks for the info. We're in Australia, so I guess we'll have to wait then for the issues! In fact, some of the US based magazines would not even process a subscription from outside US or Canada! I did just recently find an Australia knitting mag that might be OK though. I've posted it in the reply to 'wooly' below if you're interested.

Cheers,

Scott.

Yeah, I'm checking out the link. If I hear of any other OZ based mags, I'll let you know.

I'm in the UK and subscribe to Interweave Knits and Spin Off direct, I started my subscription the end of August and only got Interweave Knits last week. Still haven't received Spin Off - so beware of the time delay! I also subscribe to Vogue Knitting through GMC publications in the UK and their service is great. There are several UK knitting magazines that have letters in them from subscribers abroad (including AU and NZ) namely Simply Knitting. I second the signing up to online newsletters too. Knitty is absolutely brilliant and have knitted several of their patterns and I like the Knitting Daily one too.

Right that's me done, I'll go back to lurking in the background again...

If you're looking for something modern, check out knit.1 (that's "knit dot one"). It's geared toward the younger, hipper crowd.

get it and it has a lot of funkier projects. I LOVE Interweave Knitsand still enjoy Vogue Knitting (been getting it for over 20 years).Cast On (from TKGA) is good, but not my favorite. Alan

Knitty rocks! I already bought the yarn for my next "me" project, Abotanicity from the latest issue. Of course, this has to wait until I finish my holiday knitting and that sweater for my older daughter (which only needs sleeves knit and sewn in and shouldn't take me too long).

That's just ridiculous. There's no reason for it to take that long. Even by the cheapest surface mail!

Yeah, I've surreptitiously let her know about that, but it doesn't help me with the subscription gift thing; if I say "I've signed you up to some online newsletters... happy christmas!" somehow, I think that wouldnt go down to well hahaha. But yeah, I'll let her know about them all and see where I get with my subscription requests.

Thanks for the info!

What is her mailbox like? My main reason for not buying any subscriptions is the Australia Post man on his little bike carefully folding my mag and shoving it in a slot designed for letters. I have avoided this by "subscribing" at the newsagents. Alot of newsagents will put away the magazine for you if you ask. If she has a small mailbox, or lives in an area where mail sticking out of the box is going to be stolen, then this may be an option for you. You can then have any magazine that the newsagent is able to order for you. Have you looked in Borders Bookstores - they keep a wide range of magazines, but I am not sure what thier policy is on subscriptions.

Yarn Magazine is OK. I think it may be the only Australian one at the moment. I like Knitter's Magazine by XRX Publishing

hi Scott Just wondering..If your friend reads these mags from time to time, where is she buying her copies from? As it maybe a good idea to ask the shop owner where he gets his subscription from, he may have an address where you too can buy a years sub from.

However if you cannot get a subscription into a mag for your country, how about one of the machine knitting video's or DVD's that are available. Knit to Fit or The Perfect neckline, or any techno type one that she can look at time and time again. Or how about a program like DAK or a calcuknit something along these lines may be appreciated.

Yeah, that's a possibility. She doesnt read any of them regularly, but she's seen a few for sale in a local shop that's dedicated to magazines. I didn't think the magazine store would be too keen on helping find somwhere else from which to buy magazines, though!

Yeah, maybe. I'll be getting her a book as well, so maybe a DVD would be better. I guess it's easier to learn when you can see it being done, rather than trying to follow static diagrams.

Cheers,

Scott.

You don't need to sign up for Knitty or Magknits, they're free ezines. But hope you can find a live one to give here.
