Lion Brand re Martha's Poncho

Okay people. I wrote Lion Brand earlier today asking them about what they intended to do about acknowledging the woman who made it for Martha, and that there was the potential for bad publicity depending on how they handled the situation. Following is the reply I received just now, and I think it speaks for itself.

"Hi Shelagh,

We are trying hard to work through the prison system both to donate yarn for prisoners to use and to reward Martha's friend who did the orignal poncho. As you may understand, this information is not something that would necessarily be publicly available, but we appreciate your concern and interest.

If we can get permission to publish the name of the original designer, we will do so.

In the interim, we are working to meet the needs of the Lion Brand community and to offer our version of this pattern -- both in crochet and knit.

With Warm Regards,

Nancy Miracle Webmaster Lion Brand Yarn Company"

Good job Shillelagh! Of course "reward" is one thing; pay is another. Since Martha was allowed to get richer when in prison, maybe this other woman will be as well. But anyway, congrats on taking the bull by the horns.

I wonder if that was done in Lion Brand yarn?

just how did Martha get richer in prison? she was not drawing a salary from her company. it's *possible* her stock portfolio made some money, but considering how poorly the market has been doing, i doubt she made much that way either. of course, all prisoners get 'paid' for thier work, but it's really pennies per hour & hardly going to make her or any other prisoner "richer". now, if you want to discuss the Enron executives & how they are still getting richer, i'm more likely to listen... lee

She got richer because stock in her company tripled while she was locked up.

Just wondering out loud, is she still the main share holder of the company she set up....also she did not do one stitch of work on her company, while in jail, she could not, since she was not allowed to do so.

So folks when we do look at the broader picture. There are many people employed in the Martha Steward setup. They did not do anything wrong and therefore did not go to jail. Martha, if indeed she is guilty, made a personal mistake, The people who work for her have absolutly nothing to do with that. They went to work every day, and earned their keep, in an honest way. When you have a good product, and you do a good job on it, the value of the stocks may go up. (mind you this is a simple way of looking at it, because there are many other very outside factors involved for a stock to go up and down. E.g. the value of the US dollar versus the currency values in the rest of the world, or what is happening warwise in the rest of the world, and do not forget the oil situation, or god forbit Mr Greenspan sneezes LOL .

It was while she was in jail that announcements were made for new tv show series. Of course she "worked" in prison... she had visitors, she thought, she talked, she decided. They can't monitor your brain activity -- at least not all of it -- at least not yet! lol

I'm on her side. I think she was crazy for lying about it, but hey, she's not boring. And she's paid her debt; even her harshest critics will have to concede that.

It looks like Herrschners beat Lon Brand to it. I just received an email from Herrschners announcing a kit and free pattern for the Martha Stewart Poncho.

Seems more like the coattails of the person who actually made it. And who likely is getting absolutely nothing for her efforts.

It will be interesting to see if the new Martha steps up and does something about that. She was showing her poncho at the news conference her first day back, so I know she acknowledged the maker in some way at least.

I guess that the companies know a good thing when they see it.

You know what? We can blame it on the public's fascination with "celebrities" - notorious or not! I'd like to say that it is not my fault, but I like hearing about some celebrity news. I am not a "fan" of anyone any more, but I had my days - especially when I was a teenager!

We have to wait for the outcome of that senario. Let see if Martha Stewart is going to talk about that. So far she has not said or done anything to not giving that person the credit. As said before, it is possible that that pattern was from another source altogether. Before we judge lets find the facts

Yes I guess so too, there is nothing new under the sun. Also (we) in a broad sense, are on the other end of that deal, asking for the pattern.....LOL

Salutations!

I am new to the board.

I hope you don't think that Martha was wrong for holding her stocks while she was in prison!

The state cannot rightfully strip you of your legally gotten possessions or wealth, just because you are incarcerated- for any reason.

The rise in stock was due to other influences. People's confidence in the company and their desire to purchase goods/stock, the company's policies and practices that created that confidence and the positive comments of stock analysts, who have recently had not much good to say about much of anything.:-)

Martha was a patient investor and it paid off. She was not allowed to conduct business while in the "stripy hole", and if her stocks had plummeted she could have been wiped out. I suppose some people would have been pleased, but many other investors would have also been hurt by that scenario.

I say that although she made a dumb move with the ImClone advice, she is basically a smart person. She's paid/paying her dues, get off her back.

George W did a similar thing years ago selling massive stock holdings of an oil company on insider info, Daddy George Sr (president) covered it up and now W is President. Those records were sealed in the interest of national security! If you want to be mad at someone, here's a great target for you venom!

Is Martha Worse? I think not!

Anyway, I like to ponder these and other questions while I crochet ;-)
