Did anyone see the grey poncho that Martha Stewart was wearing when released from prison? It looked crocheted with a scalloped edge and appeared to be made out of chenille yarn. The pattern looks familiar to me. I checked Lionbrand's website but I didn't see it there. The newscaster listed Miss Stewart's activities in prison which included crocheting. So I figured she may have made it herself. The most interesting part of it was the large scallops on the edge.
Hiya, Lee! Yes, I saw it, and covet the pattern too! I'll see what I can find.... and if YOU find it, let me know offlist @ noreen dot j at gmail dot COM. Hugs, Noreen
One of the offbeat "news sites" I visited had a picture of her wearing the poncho and boarding the plane. The caption said that the inmates at the prison had made it for Miss Stewart as a going away present.
There was a bit on the news tonight showing her making a speech at her company. She brought out the poncho and said a "friend" at (name of the prison) had made it for her, and she seemed quite touched by the gift.

and why shouldn't the designer get paid for the pattern, even if she is in prison? perhaps this will help her develop a means of income when she is released. i really do NOT understand why people are so snarky at Martha Stewart. is it just jealousy at her income or what? she has
*never* claimed that she does everything herself, although she does drive herself quite hard. lee
From what I have heard (and I am only quoting the media here), she also drives everyone else quite hard. She has also profited from her prison stay in that her stocks have gone up. When she was sentenced, I was not snarky, even though I was never impressed with her. In fact, I made a comment that - had it been a man doing the same thing - he would likely not have been sentenced to prison time, that she was being punished for playing with the "big boys". If somebody in prison designed the poncho, then that person should profit from it, not Martha.
Well lets wait and see, who is going to profit, and who is going to get the money if indeed this is going to be a "pay for the pattern, exchange" We really do not know who created the pattern. We only know via the media (who not always are truthfully in reporting) that the poncho was made for Martha by a fellow inmate, we do not know, it that pattern came from a pattern book written by someone else.
I think though, that Martha Steward's stock did go down at the point she went to jail. I also know that if the stock went up again, it most likely has more to do with the people still working for her and holding the fort down while she was gone, than that she is in jail. Again what we know from the media, that she did work very hard during her stay in prison, and my feeling was that she also did learn a lot from beeing a prisoner.
I personally admire her for her saffy, for her endurance in a mans world. For employing so many people, as well as the products she markets: " That of being a good houswife, of enjoying cooking and recycling odds and ends, in a time were women who stay at home are looked down on. I also thinks that if she did not drive her people hard, who works for her, she would not ever have made it in a cut throat marketing society. No we do not have to like her, after all we realy hardly know her, but I think she took her licks and is ready to go on with her life. I hope that she will do well, so that so many people who do depend on her for work will do well also.
Martha Stewart doesn't bother me one way or another....but, If the pattern is published and Martha gets the $$$, I'd like to see someone here design one just like it from the pictures on the internet and post it. ;-) I know someone here must have the talent...
I just got an email from Lion Brand yarns that said *they* were coming out with the pattern for Martha's poncho. There was no mention of Martha or the gal in prison getting any credit. I think that stinks, too! Hazel
Before going off the deep end, perhaps an e-mail to Lion Brand asking them about it might be in order. If the gal in prison used an existing pattern in a leaflet or book or whatever, they can't very well use that pattern. I intend to ask them, and if I get a reply, I'll post it.
Good plan. Though my instinct is that they are simply (or will say they are )doing a copy of what is seen in photos, and it is a fairly straightforward kind of poncho, hard to proove piracy. I think it behooves them to try to contact the maker and find out if there's a pattern. (The publisher/owner of which should jump on this!) If the maker is, of course, allowed to have such contacts.
30 minutes ago I just saw one of those celebrity gossip programs where it showed Martha clearly saying that she will get the pattern from the person who made it. My guess is that the poncho is made from an already published pattern.
