More moebiouses

Interesting..those were designed originally back in the early '80's by a friend of mine in the Village. I used to help her make them for her inventory. They are fun to do.

Hi Mirjam,

I know about the moebius strip from my math days in high school - it has some very interesting properties mathematically, such as having one side and one edge. You can verify this by starting to draw a line down the center of the moebius strip and keep drawing until you get to where you started... at which point you discover you've drawn the line on what "logically" is both sides of the strip.

My question - how long is such a moebius scarf? And why do some people like them?

I suppose this is a sign of ignorance but I'll ask , what are moebiouses? Sofia D

Hi Sofia,

They are a form of scarf that Mirjam has made. If you do a google search for moebious you will find them there and never be afraid to ask a question, we all learned by asking.

Hugs,

Nora

Ah, dear Mirjam... remember your patience with me when I couldn't GET the 'jist' of moebious??? You were SO patient with me... and if I recall, wasn't it Ria who explained it to YOU? Hugs, Noreen

Mirjam- that's perfect that your knitting art should be immortalised along with you! What stitch pattern did you use? I was thinking about using one of those fluffy eyelash yarns to make a mobius out of, wonder how that would work? Marie and the cats

Sofia , it is not a stupid question at all , A moebious is realy a mathematical term [named after ,,,] the best way to see one is take a long [more than 30 ] narrow paper ribbon , close into a ring by turning one end 180 around , glue ends together , now you have a ring with a twist ,,,, make a mark at one place on the edge and follow the edge with your hand it will go all around the edge almost in a 8 shaped line. Elizabeth Zimmermann , taught all American ladies to knit a Shawl and sew the edges together in an hidden seam . I was intriqued and worked out how to do it in one piece in Crochet, from the middle out , that RIA , showed me how to knit it from the middle out. As a shawl it is parctical , sence it doesn`t fall , the moebious form doesn`t let it hang with a Bulge under your middle , but it closes neatly and hangs flat , It is reasy to put over your head , turn the longer side and put as a Neck cover over the head part,,,,, It is very useful as a shoulder cover , it stays and doesn`t move seo much , When wider it is really like a Stola,,,, mirjam

Yes Noreen , it takes time , but as i explained i worked out the crochet by myself , RIA taught me the knitted One ,, mirjam

Marie , thank you :>:>:>: The thing is that since it has only one side one should use a pattern that will look nice on both sides ,,, thus i use a mixture of rounds where i knit 10 , purl 10 , taking care it will move sidesways , than at time i purl a whole round or knit a whole round ,, from time to time i make a k 2 together Loop over needle ... it could be made quite lacy , but i am not yet there .... I think Pluffy eyelash would be GREAT , than maybe you could make it all in a lacy form alternating between k and p rows .... mirjam

Hi Sofia,

If you take a strip of paper say 12 inches long and 2 inches wide, then bring the two ends together to form a ring, that's a regular ring. If however you twist one of the ends 180 degrees before you attach the two ends, that's a moebius strip. Again, it has one side and one edge, as I wrote in another post.

If you cut a regular ring in half (along its diameter), it will fall into two pieces.

If you cut a moebius strip along its "diameter", however, it will stay in one piece.

Thank you Mirjam. It was the maths reference that through me off. I asked myself what was the "illustrious gentleman" doing among yarns and needles ;-)The paper part I can understand but the crocheting and knitting part ??? I don't. I guess I'll have to try and make a bit and then I suppose I'll get it. Sofia D

Hi David. I've been having fun with a strip of paper that I stapled the way you said and then I cut it in "half". I got a very bizarre "multiple" 8. I'm now going to try and cut the 8 in "half" and see what I'll get. Yes I know, I'm curious like that :-) Thank you and it sure did help. Hi Sofia, the "illustrious gentleman" is back *chuckle*, someone who has many interests in life,

If you can imagine and make a moebius strip with paper, you can do the same thing with a scarf. Put the two ends of a scarf together, you get a regular ring. Put the two ends of the scarf together after giving one of the ends a

180 degrees twist, that's a moebius scarf.

Hi Sofia,

*chuckle* I just responded to your previous moebius comment. It's been a long time since I played with moebius strips, I seem to remember that after you cut a moebius strip a second time, you do get two distinct pieces, but they are intertwined.

If you first glue the two ends of the paper strip together, you can cut along its length more than once without worry that the strip ends will separate from each other.

Bon chance! (Non, je ne parle pas plus de le francais, je parle plus de l'espanol.)

Hi David. Drat, why did you go and spoil my surprise?? LOL I was going to do it but then something came up and my amusement was delayed . I had already imagined the end result of cutting the paper ribbon in more than one strip. The image of a magician's rings came to my mind.( Is this phrase even correctly written? I wonder ) Oh well, you know what I meant. :-) Amazing how things I played with when I was a "kid", have a name after all. Sofia D

Hi David, I can imagine the "device" (the one made of paper or some other material ) having it's applications somewhere but why make a scarf and "glue" the two ends together? To what purpose?? A scarf is something you roll tight around your neck, why make it already "rolled"?? Maybe I'm much of a Tom Boy to see the practicality of the thing even though Mirjam already explained. Doesn't it mess your hair when you try to take it off? The mind boggles :-) Sofia D (who keeps wondering)

They can actually be very versatile - wrapping twice around the neck for really cold days, or pulling part of it up for a hood. (I don't care if my hair gets mussed up if I want to be warm.) And they're a lot more fun to make if you knit them without seams. ;)

Mirjam,

I didn't realise that your crocheted moebius was made in one piece with no seam! How did I miss that?? :) I've knitted one from a pattern found on the web without a seam, which I found very interesting to do, but I can't see how to crochet one.
