Noth Ronaldsay Fleece

What a weird experience I had yesterday, I had to go over to the guy who does the music promo video's and dvd's and pick up some stuff from him. Whilst i was there his wife came in, and although I've been speaking to her on the phone for over six years now, I've never met her. Anyway I looked at her and said, Gosh I've seen you somewhere before haven't I? thinking she'd probably been to one of my shows and I'd noticed but didn't know who she was, and she replied, '' No I don't think so!'' then, ''Are you into horses Cher or anything like that, and I said, not since I was a kid, and then she said ''Sheep'' and I explained I spun their fleece and she then went onto say that she has N.Ronaldsay baby lambs which she shows and it came about she'd obviously been at some show or another I had been to, and we'd probably only glanced at one another ... but the upshot was I came away with three baby lamb fleeces ...LOL how weird it is the way we make these wonderbubble connections.

The fleece are in the tub in the garden soaking and the water is quite brown, so am guessing I'll need to re-soak them again to clean them up a bit more...but they are lovely and soft and and a mulberry of colours between soft browns and greys...will know better once they have been scoured a bit more.

I only went over to pick up a couple of DVD's and to watch another promo this guy had done for a band...LOL

Do you feed the roses with the soaking water? I used to and we had roses in abundance. We do not have many roses now but I took a picture of the back garden yesterday whilst I sat on the swing enjoying the sun. I put it up on my website under My backyard. Shirley

It's so COLD here, Shirley! My seed plants in pots were set out to be tough and sound and bigger, but they have not changed a bit the last week! But as they have survived, I'm sure they are tough enough! LOL! I am warmed by your colourful back garden now! Thank you! AUD ;-))

I think the weirdest thing I ever experienced though but again a nice surprise was when a Rock guitarist friend of mine called one evening to chat over some music scores etc and he is a hard rock guitar as well, anyway he was sat by my side on the pc, and kept looking at my spinningwheel, and I said...'''ok I know, it seems weird for a rock singer to have a hobby like spinning''' and he said, '''no, I am just building one in my shed, I'm also doing a loom''' Of course I knew he did odd woodwork stuff, but not knowing for sure what it was and thinking it was probably garden planters I had the shock of my life, so now I've been over and test driven three new wheels of his and a loom for him..funny how life takes it's twists and turns and brings friends and associates together in the most surprising circumstances, especially as Steve and I have been friends for years this was such a shock...lol

Wow! I'm not 100% sure - memory blanked out - but I think North Ronaldsay is one of the nicer ones. And lamb fleeces to boot! I don't spin but if I had a lamb fleece I think I'd have to learn how.

It is a totally unknown breed to me, is it a wool, milk or meat breed...??

Well there are several lambs fleeces in the huge bag I thought was one large fleece, anyway it's all washed and dried and in cotton bags now, ready to drum card for me to spin a warp for the floor loom to make a throw with... I did have a wry grin when I thought as I loaded the bag into the boot or trunk of the car that DH would say...'' Not another Fleece'' but no all he said was, '' you running short of spinning fibres then?'' obviously knowing that - of course - (lol) I wouldn't get more fleece if i didn't absolutely need it ;-D

Thank you for those two links, I have copied all the info given there. I have indeed seen pictures of this sheep, but did not recognize the breed name. LOL..... old age or what

It is a wool breed. I think I read about them on Liz Lovick's weblog. I have the impression that there aren't many of them and it's one of the finest of the Shetland wools.

Thanks Tamar

I looked at the websites Cher mentioned and have printed these out for reference. Indeed I did know about this old breed, but had forgotten the name...Overload in the computer in my little tiny head....LOL. I love the colours I saw. Yesterday evening we watched a documentary on the old Stone sheep living wild in the most Northern part of British Columbia. They also have, as the old sheep breeds, two coats, and they also have a variety of colour in their fleece. These sheep have not been domesticated. But I sure would love to have some of that fleece in my hands.
