OT: First holy communion

Is it customary to give a gift to a child who's having their first holy communion if you're the grandparents? If so, what would you suggest. My nephew will be having his next month and neither my parents or I are Catholic.

TIA, Jenn

I think it varies a bit depending on the ethicity of the family, but around here, it would be customary to give the child a card and some suitable religious gift like a prayer or other religious book, rosary, religious medal etc. There are stores that sell such things. Some people also give the child gifts of money. You can also attend the service and possibly a small party at the family home, and take/receive photos of the child in his or her finery. That used to be much more elaborate than i think it is now.

My son received a gold chain and a religious medal from his grandparents and my DD got the same from one side and a pretty necklace from the other. We have a St. Jude Shop nearby and they have a lot of very nice gifts for the children. You can check there also. What a special time for the family! Diane
